87 C6 to E4OD or ZF5?

I have an 87 351HO C6 with air lockers and 4.56 gears. Fun offroad but I need an od to make this a better daily driver. I am open to suggestions as to which would be the best, easiest, and $$$$. I have seen an article on the e4od but the only articles I have come up on the zf are for eb's. Any thoughts guys? Thx.

I don't have much experience with trans but I have not heard the greatest reviews of the E4OD I have one with 144,000 miles on it but I am not sure if it is origional. Do some research on the E4OD also not sure about wiring it in because it is controlled from the ECM module. How about an AOD maybe check with one of the companies that makes the adapter kits for Bronco 2's and rangers. The AOD used a mechanical overdrive if I am not mistaken. Good luck

For your application. i would recomend an AOD, that is built right. I have a 92 bronco with an E4OD that melted at 200,000 miles while pulling 7,000lbs up a long steep grade (the grapevine in California). Up tell then i had no problems with it. However i have heard a lot of bad things about them, and they are very expensive to work on or replace parts on. Plus they are computer controlled. Now for the AOD side of the story. When the E4OD melted i was hauling my 66 JEEP J-300 pickup. I have an EFI 351 with an AOD in it and used it to haul the broke bronco back. I built the aod several years ago for it with a transgo shift kit. It is my play truck and ways in it 5500 lbs. I have abused the hell out of that AOD including several mudding and hill climbing trips with my 39.50 mickey thompsons. It has never so much as caughed, and i absolutely love it. I have commented several times how i wish the E4OD worked as nice as the AOD. They build them for 500 horsepower mustangs, and are relatively cheap and easy to come by. plus they are mechanically controlled. Bottom line is, in my opinion you would be better off with an AOD, built up a bit.:-)

87 C6 to E4OD or ZF5?

I am aware that a seperate module would be required to use the E4OD. I believe that Baumann engineering offers that. I have heard that the E4 must be rebuilt to 96 specs and then it is supposedly better than the aod.

I was wondering if anyone had a change from the c6 and what they had to do to accomodate it. Mounts, drive shafts, etc.

Thx for the feedback.
