I have a F350 6.0L 64K miles. Long story short, a diesel shop (respected very well) tells me to have the oil screen located in the valley underneath all the components on the top of the engine, replaced now before it breaks free and lets all that junk its collected into the HPOP and causes a major problem. Replacing the screen now is $1000, vs. later could be $4000. I never even knew or heard there was an oil screen, his term, in there somewhere. Is he full of it, or is this a real issue? I don't rack up the miles on it like I used, that is why it now would be considered low miles vs. high 4-5 years ago. The engine is unmodified and stock. Had turbo issues fixed under warranty, but nothing else on the engine. I bought it new. I only asked them about working on it because eventually I will probably need something, and they are currently fixing my work van which has a 7.3L. Only owned it two years and this is its first work since I bought it. So now I had to find a diesel shop to use, other than a dealer.
Yes there is and no I would not tear into the motor just to update this screen, even if it does rip it would first have to get by your oil filter. They all seemed to tear prematurely I think your mechanic just wants 1000 in his pocket.
No need to change it unless you're already having oil cooler plugging.
They are just trying to make money, and it isn't a $4000 repair at a later time. The IPR has a screen too, so worst case the IPR gets loaded with junk, a $200 part.
Download this the look at page 22 to see the route oil takes the the actual screen pic is bottom of page 25. The screen is located at "oil reservior for high pressure pump" at the the bottom of this reservoir
