What's possibly failing?

A few weeks ago my dad had his 05 F350 just quit on him. He got in it that morning and everything went normal. he drove it about 40 miles to the airport to pick someone up. After picking them up and returning to the parking lot to come home the truck would not start.

After several attempts and trying different things it would not start. He called for a wrecker to come pick it up, and when the wrecker arrived about an hour had elapsed. Just for kicks he tried starting the truck and it started just fine. He drove the truck home without any issues.

He got in the truck the next morning and it started just fine. He drove to a very well known diesel mechanic in our area, where they told him the computer was not showing any codes. A few weeks went by with no issues and then all of a sudden they returned plus with an extra issue now. When you would apply the throttle the truck would not rev up or take off from a dead stop with the truck in drive or reverse.

He took it back to the shop and the computer said all 8 injectors were and that the alternator was putting out 11.8 or 12.8 volts can't remember which, I just know it was low. They said the low voltage could be messing with the control board for the injectors. After replacing the alternator it did not help and ended up replacing the control module/board for the injectors.

Still having the same issues and the computer isn't showing any codes.

Any ideas would b greatly appreciated. truck had 95k miles when bought in 2010 and has 155k now. regular maintenance, not abused and only occasional light towing of a 6k lb 5er.

Are you referring to the ficm? That's the 1st thing that comes to mind, esp. if there was a low voltage issue.

Sounds like a high pressure oil system problem. He needs to have his mechanic air test the HPO system for leaks.

69cj I cant remember what he called it. I know its mounted to the firewall and it was around $1200 to replace it including labor.

ficm is on the drivers side valve cover. This was my 1st choice because of the low voltage. My 2nd choice would have been Tim's 1st choice. Could also be a flakey icp sensor or pigtail.

Could be a high pressure oil system leak, sticking IPR valve, ICP sensor/connector, engine wiring issue or a few other possibilities. The key to diagnosing it correctly is going to be check it while it is acting up. Which can be tough with an intermittent concern.

It would not crank or start. the mechanic has it and he's going to leave his computer hooked up to the truck while he drives it home. He lives about 20 miles from his shop.

Being an 05' my vote goes to the standpipes, dummy plugs and or STC fitting, but its a good idea to do the air test of the HPO system to confirm it. And you really need some gauges that read live data as they will tell you in a lot of cases why it isn't starting, you need 500 PSI ICP pressure before it will activate the injectors. The scan gauge II or one of the smartphone apps like dashboss for IOS devices or torque pro for android are all good options with Dashboss being the best bang for your buck out of the 3.

By the way I read his post he's already replaced the FICM (control board/module for the injectors)

Was it worked on at a Ford dealership? Do you plan on wrenching on it or just trying to get an idea of what's wrong? And finally, how do you like your 2011?

I do know that a few months ago he started the truck and everything started normal. Except the climate controls didn't come on. The display was completely blank. There was no temp control fan control. You couldn't turn on or off using tbe power button. It was like there was no power at all. He turned off the truck and restarted the truck and it came on. Hasn't done it since. I can't remember if it effected the radio.

That's fairly common. Normally related to a flaky soldering job in the climate control panel itself and not likely related to the current issue.

May need to look at the Batterie cables, also a Gauge to read live data would be helpful to narrow things down, check V-ref
