Checked my trans fluid this morning and found black gritty residue on the end of the dipstick. The fluid level was fine and the fluid color, odor and appearance is also good. Each time I wiped off the end of the stick and put it back in it came out with a little gritty black/brown substance on the end. The trans has the factory fluid, never a problem, and 37,000 miles. This is obviously not good. Anyone else experience this, or have ideas on what is going on?
This should be covered under the 5yrs/100,000mi. powertrain warranty. However I am currently in discussion with Ford on warranty coverage for radiator hose and radiator replacement and don't want to start a new issue unless it is covered.
From the dipstick tube? The dipstick seals with an O-ring at the top and it is securely inserted into the tranny case at the bottom. How would it be from the tube? If it was in the tube how would it not get into the tranny as I put the stick back in and push it down? No worry isn't going to work for me on this one.
My dads 08 did the same thing. The dipstick tube sits really close to the exhaust and best we could figure, it developed condensation in the tube causing it to rust because of the heat cycles. We took it off, cleaned it with a wire brush, and reinstalled. Maybe some sort of turbo wrap or foil type exhaust shield may help?
