Truck is a 95 F150 with a 5.0. Trans is E40D. It slips a little in 2nd so I'm rebuilding it next weekend. I have already ordered a master rebuild kit (OE spec because I couldn't find an HP kit for a 2wd F150) and a B&M "shift improver" kit. I'm also planning to install an auxiliary trans cooler.
My build plans for this truck include all the usual bolt ons and eventually a Vortech centrifugal supercharger kit. Im shooting for ~350hp. I won't be running more then about 8psi since it'll be on a stock bottom end and I have no intention of rebuilding the engine in the foreseeable future (the engine is healthy, perfect compression across all 8- benefits of buying the truck from its original owner who took immaculate care of it).
How much power can a stock-rebuilt E40D with the B&M shift kit and an auxiliary cooler handle reliably? Truck is a daily driver that will see the drag strip on rare occasion once the build is done.
Are you 100% sure that is a E4OD behind that 5.0L engine? Most had a 4R70W in this time period. Check the door jamb sticker for the Transmission Code. Code U is a 4R70W, Code E is an E4OD.
The transmission pan on a 4R70W has 16 bolts. The E4OD has 20.
Oh man I didn't even think about that. I didn't know hoe to ID it, my friend Ben is a Ford certified master tech and he said it would be an E4OD so thats what I ran with. I already ordered the rebuild kit, I hope he wasn't wrong. Im on the road right now so I cant check it. (Im a OTR truck driver)
Regardless, same question. How much power can the stock trans handle with a B&M shift kit and a fluid cooler?
I am not 100% certain what triggers whether or not the truck would have a 4R70W versus an E4OD. All I know is from my experience the F150s are most likely 4R70W. Broncos were always E4OD in this model year.
There are F150/5.0L/E4OD combinations out there, but more than once someone "banked" on having an E4OD then found out it is a 4R70W.
Yes its MAF. Okay I ordered the 4R70W kit. Idk what Im gonna do with the E4OD kit now. Damn I really wish I would've known this before I bought the E4 kit.
So you guys think that with a fresh rebuild, the B&M shift kit, and an auxiliary cooler it'll hold up to the power I'm gonna be throwing at it?
It does? Sorry I know you're probably thinking I'm an idiot lol. I did the compression test before I bought it but I was only home for a day before I had to leave out again so I haven't had much chance to look it over thoroughly. I'm going home for four days next weekend so I'll have more time to look it over better.
Would it be worth upgrading the cooler to a bigger one or is the factory one decent?

That still doesn't mean you have a 4R70W. They made MAF E4OD 5.0 F-150s too. Just get under there and count the pan bolts. If you have 20, it's an E4OD.
I generally prefer the Transgo products over B&M, but you should be fine with just 350HP either way.
Ok I had my friend go out and look at it. It is a 4R70W. Im sorry I doubted you guys. Idk what Im gonna do with the E4OD kit thats on the way to my house but at least I was able to figure out that I needed a different kit before I started tearing into it. Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.
