rear diff covers. wtf?

rear diff covers. wtf?
i will be preforming maintenance on the differentials soon and going to replace the rear cover along with the gaskets and fluid. I figured a nice basic black cover will be good then i see about a million other covers. big ones....shiny ones...What is the point of having the cover that dissipates heat. is this for alot of towing?? does it help? i use my truck mainly for towing the boat which means the differential will sometimes come into contact with the water. i know this will cause some condensation over time and requires the fluid to be changed more often. are there any covers that are more beneficial for this situation? It seems to me the $28 dollar cover will do.
