Ok, Im just really curious about this.
Im a 351M owner and I know the v8 and FE and the I-6 and the slant 6 design, but what is a y block and how does it differ from my traditional v8? it sounds really dumb but Im a curious 17 year old and i like automobile history
Let's see... V8 nomenclature comes from the rods being V shaped as viewed from the front of the block, right? As opposed to an I as in a straight 6 or 8. When Ford came up with their first overhead valve blocks the crankcase skirt was extended below the centerline of the crank to stiffen the block and add support at the crank bearings. Now the shape of the block from the front appears to be Y shaped. They were so named.... Best . Himmelberg
Peter is correct, Ford even used the term Y Power in their 54 car ads.
However as is the norm with Fomoco nothing is as it seems.
The 52 Lincoln is also a Y style block and was the first OHV in the modern Ford family. It was the 317, followed by the 341 and 368.
The later, Lincoln derived, Big Truck motor is also a Y.
However the Ford/Merc car and light truck has captured everyones idea of the Y.
Even the heading on this forum is missing parts. The 239 and 256 are the first of those Y's.
Then there are the 279, 302, 332 truck blocks; not to be confused with any others with those dimensions.
