Airbag chime?

I've searched quite a bit through the forums trying to find the right course of action. I bought a '94 f150 XL used and it does the 5 times 5 chimes every 25 minutes or so indefinitely, with or without the key in, whether it's running or not. I've been reading as much as I can find on the topic and I understand that most of the time this chime is caused by a burnt out airbag lamp. I did pull out the instrument cluster and found a number of lamps burnt out, but not the airbag one. I decided to change all the lamps anyway and put it back together. Of course, this did nothing for the chimes. I was thinking maybe the clock spring because my horn also doesn't work. My turn signals and wipers work. This truck doesn't have CC and the airbag lamp doesn't light up at start or ever. I used the EEC plug jumper method to check for OBD codes and confusingly, the ABS lamp blinked a code instead of the check engine lamp. The code blinks 1-pause-3-pause-3-longer pause-1-pause-3-pause-3. I can't find any references to a code like that. If anyone has the expertise to diagnose this better than I have, I'd appreciate any input. Thanks

The airbag idiot light being burned out will cause the airbag system to "chime", but the series of chimes are actually codes telling you what the fault description is.

If you're absolutely sure you jumpered the test plug for the EEC and not the anti-skid, then my next thought is that someone replaced the gauge cluster with one from another truck of a different year. Over the years, the wiring connections changed withing the connector shells, so perhaps you have the wrong cluster, therefore your Engine light is on the ABS light circuit and the airbag light goes to something else.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the reply miller, but the lamp is actually fine. Dixie, you are correct about the cluster swap. The P.O. told me the 'dash' was from another truck. I don't know the year it was from, but I've read that there are some incompatibilities between years. I don't suppose you have any leads for information about re-wiring the cluster do you?

Check out Post #3 in the thread here.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...cluster-s.html

Looks like he has a 94/5 truck also.

There's a few threads around here regarding clusters, with wiring pinouts so you can compare.

Subford seems to have schematics for everything, you could try PM'ing him too.

A burned out 'check engine' light will also sond the chime. Actually to my understanding, ANY burned out warning light-check engine, seatbelt, ABS, etc that is burned out with do this. Pretty sure it's a redundancy thing....

Can I resurrect this thread for an update and ask for some insight please?

I made some progress with this truck. Checked the part number on my cluster and found it to be from a 92. Swapped it for one from a 94 and now the airbag light not only exists but is flashing a 32 code. Also, my OBD test now flashes the CEL correctly (Thanks Dixie).

It's still beeps 5 times 5 beeps every half an hour, all day, all night, but now it stops beeping when I drive it.

Since my horn didn't work and I had the 32 code, my research led me to change the clockspring. This fixed my horn but did nothing for the beeping.

I'd put up with the beeping but I believe it is draining my battery surprisingly rapidly.

Does anyone have a clue for me?
(Defective air bag? Air bag diag. monitor?)

Thanks

No it won't. The chime is only for the airbag warning light circuit being open.

Nushman, if the light is working then the chime should have quit. You didn't put an LED in there instead of a bulb, did you? I'm pretty sure the way it detects a blown bulb (or other open-circuit condition) is by current draw.

Is it the right bulb for that cluster?

Could just be the module is AFU also... although I won't say that for sure until it's proven bad.

The AB light is the standard lamp and is brand new. Looked at it this past weekend and the air bag 32 code is now a 51 code. I think the module is malfunctioning. I'm going to be looking into the intermittent ground fault. Any tips for finding and testing the system grounding points would be appreciated. Thanks
