Upper steering column bearing replacement

'76, 2WD, 3-on-the-tree.

Got the steering wheel off, screws out of the turn signal / hazard switch assy. There's enough slack in the harness that I was able to feed at least an inch in through the hole in the column, under the dash, but I can't pick up any of that slack up top. Two questions:
  • Is there any way to get enough slack in the harness that I can get the switch assy over the end of the shaft?
  • Can I replace the bearing with the shaft still in place?
I've done a search, and looked through both factory and aftermarket manuals, but can't find the the answers I need.

There is a clip on the inside of the column near the bottom that the wire goes through. It may be keeping the wiring for sliding up the column. If you can get the t/s switch over the shaft you should be able to replace the upper bearing.

I undid the clip, and fed about an inch (there's more available) into the column, but I can't get the slack at the top, to pull the switch assy out. I was wondering if there's something inside the column that holds the harness captive.

Good to know about the bearing. Thanks!

I have that diagram, thanks. Doesn't give any detail on the harness, unfortunately, aside from showing that it goes in near the firewall.

Got the new bearing and rubber retainer in. There's still a little play, roughly .020"; much less than before. What else should I look at to eliminate this? Or, should I just not worry about it?

Why not pull the pins out of the wiring connector. They come out with a small screwdriver to lift the release tab in the connector.

I couldn't get the harness to move within the column. I guess I could've pulled each wire individually, but didn't want to hassle with trying to get them back down the column.

I cut the tie-wrap at the steering wheel end, and pulled the wires out of the holder on the turn signal assy. This gave me enough slack to pull that assy over the end of the shaft, and access the bearing.

Just FYI. The wires are in there own conduit. You don't really have to fish them through.
