I have a 99 f-250 super duty 4x4 w/ e4od utility bed pretty heavy. 377,000 miles on truck. 63,000 miles on transmission overhaul and installed ,hd converter /shift kit,
While trying to pass getting on freeway the third to fourth shift had a split second chatter or slipage while engaging to fourth. after the shift I hit passing gear then the tranny popped out of gear.
I understand the failure is mecanical and if it were electronic it should still engage in 1st and reverse. I don't have low or burnt fluid
I'm just curious if anyone had this issue and tore the transmission down to find the cause. I'm guessing possible causes could be the band or a drum snap ring.
I would also guess from past expierience the torque converter would have had prior symptoms but maybe not.

All '99 trucks have the 4R100, not the E4OD.

I can't think of a snap ring that could cause no drive or reverse. A broken input shaft is not uncommon.

Thanks Mark. I was wondering about that also but, thought it would make a noise of some sort. either way it's coming out .I was just curious because I'd read on here about the same issue

It would make a noise, but probably not loud enough for you to hear it over the engine noise.
