Water pump went out today, so I am replacing the thermostat while I'm doing the pump, which thermostat should I use? Stock or 180*?
I was also wondering exactly what coolant to use, I know it is called extended life coolant, but other than that is there anything special to look for?
And is it generally recommended to install that coolant bypass filter kit?
I have also heard of an upper radiator hose that goes through the belt, is that better for some reason than the stock hose?
I see that Clay sells a lower water pump elbow, is it a good idea to replace that? Or should I just inspect and replace? And if inspect and replace I assume I would just be looking for pitting?
Are there any other things I should do while I'm at it?
Water pump went out today, so I am replacing the thermostat while I'm doing the pump, which thermostat should I use? Stock or 180*? Of the two, I'd use the stock t-stat, unless you had big oil ( i.e. dual pumps).
I was also wondering exactly what coolant to use, I know it is called extended life coolant, but other than that is there anything special to look for? ELC that is CAT EC-1 Approved. Flush the system thoroughly and add 4 gallons of concentrated ELC and top off with distilled/demineralized water.
And is it generally recommended to install that coolant bypass filter kit? It does help prolong water pump life by removing grit from the system.
I have also heard of an upper radiator hose that goes through the belt, is that better for some reason than the stock hose? Get the one the goes AROUND the belt. It is the upper hose for a dual alternator application.

My first thoughts when I saw '99 and ELC in the same post... Don't want to go cause yourself to redo your injector cups because the ELC ate through the retaining compound. (or so i think is the issue with ELC in the early trucks)
I know Stewart has beat this topic to death several times as well, and for the life of me I never can remember what the prerequisites are. I recommend the OP check your build dates and read that thread thoroughly.
