I have to replace my waterpump so while I am at it I will flush the whole system, replace the heater core, hoses, t-stat (203*), and add a coolant filter. I have been looking for a write up on flushing and found the one linked below. Has anyone done this procedure and is it the right way to do it?
Yup, Gooch's is a very popular procedure. I've read that we're not supposed to use extended life coolant in the engines of our OBS PSDs; can't remember why. I just used a slightly lazy version (not as many drains/refills) of this procedure doing my '85 IDI. The flush kit is like three bucks at Advance Auto.
Option - FleetCharge anti-freeze. Pre-charged with SCA. $12 a gallon if you get the perpetual 20% discount at Advance Auto.
Option - International water pump, with built-in filter base. Requires different upper and lower hoses. This also, IIRC, means you can fit it with a coolant filter that's charged with the SCA, which will distribute itself into the coolant once you put it all back together and fill the system.
Option - recommended - the flange on the thermostat gooseneck is thin and flimsy, and prone to allowing leaks. There's a "backup" flange made of thick steel you can slip onto the housing to stiffen up the flange and improve the seal; comes with the required longer bolts. One of the sponsors (Strictly Diesel?) carries it.
Thanks for the confirmation on the flush procedure. I have done quite a bit of reading and your info is consistent with it. I plan to get the whole works as far as neck, o-rings, thermostat, fleet charge coolant. I think I will stick with the stock style water pump but have read about the international pump/filter combo.
Clay has a good price on a stock pump but only lists it for 99.5-2003. I thought I read that the pumps were compatible from 94.5-2003 minus the thermostat and neck changes. I emailed Clay to confirm.
the IH pump is tempting but I have not seen an all inclusive write up on the changes needed and part numbers for different hoses etc. I have read bolt length is different, stock hoses have to be changed. I am not at a point where I have the time or warm floor space to figure it out.
