Left for the beach, pulled Sams Gap on I-26 great no problems, dropped off into NC made it to the bottom of the mtn and started over heating, fan was blowing, ECT 244, EOT 215, pulled over let it cool, took off shot up again, so here we are parked waiting on the 7.3 to show up.....ugggg coolant is normal looking not dark, hope fully wasnt oil cooler....Anybody got any ideas...has new water pump, less than a year, along with many of the standard replacement items.....
How old is the thermostat? Did you lose any coolant? What are the ECT and EOT after an overnight cold soak?
No coolant loss, no smoke of any color, the TEMPs was ambiant temperature.... was in 70s when started this AM..Thermostat is less than a year old as well....
I'm familiar with Sam's gap, lived there when it was built. So temps were normal while climbing up it and then it got hot going down into the NC side? Were you pulling a trailer or any kind of load? Any chance your brakes were sticking when you came off the grade? Strange, but probably a coincidence it got hot when you got to the bottom.
Yea, that stretch of road is brutal. It will test your brakes/transmission and cooling system for sure. And it is an improvement over the old hwy 26 below! No chance you trailer brakes got hot and were locking up?
Where is 'Sam's Gap'? I'm headed from Knoxville to Ashville SC in August and was planning on taking rte 40 to 26 S thru the mountains. Is that anywhere near where I'm headed?
Mike
Sam's Gap is from Ashville, NC north on I-26 from I-40. If you go south of Asheville/Hendersonville you'll hit Saluda Grade over the Green River Gorge. That one is down going south, up going north. We used to do a lot of test and tunes on that stretch of I-26 because of it's rigorous grade.
Made it to the beach in the 7.3.... Took the 6.0 back home,,,heated up many times running empty.... Dad checked oil, no water, Coolant has no oil in it....sounded like i had developed a turbo noise just as it began to have the issues.... Dad said it continued to get worse on the way home....Hopefully it is nothing major....please let it be simple....
Could the water pump impeller be going/gone?
Check your flow rate from the heater hose with the
valve open and the hose in a bucket.

That's what makes it nice when posters either give us what their set-up is or have it in their sig line. Otherwise it's a bunch of guessing type q&a -- it is very nice that you guys take your time to do that... I'm with you Sean and I'll "assume" it's an '03 with 150k miles on it so the impeller is shot and what the heck, has an EGR delete without the EGR plugged in and, and, and...
When you start over heating on a major grade, drop the speed down to 55 and pull the gears into 3rd. That is also while in tow/haul mode. The temps should drop dramatically within minutes. Use your gears instead of engine and torque. They are designed to be used together.
