In december or January, i pulled my 1981 F150 named Clyde into a snow bank, opened up the hood, and took offthe carb for a full rebuild. i stuffed a rag down the intake, called it good.
Now, after many months, the snow bank is long gone, and the carb is FINALLY rebuilt to proper specifications. I'm putting it on tomorrow. other than the usual checking of fluids and tires, what else do i need to give attention to before i put this truck on the road again??
Note: all emissions have been yanked. it's a beautiful thing.
I would pull the spark plugs out and crank the engine over to get oil back up in the bearings. This also makes sure nothing got into the engine to hydro-lock it as you stuffed a rag in the intake(keeps critters out but not water)
Carb wasnt finished today... my buddy was still pressing in the throttle blade shaft bushings at noon. I did give Clyde a proper check over, pulled the plugs, and gave the truck a good crank over. Battery was fully charged, it's like i had just parked it, other than the fact it didnt fire up. I'm excited to get my old reliable back onto the road.
i noticed that the transmission fluid looks a hair dark for my tastes, i think after im on the road for a month or so, i may change the fluid, filter, and gasket. I've also got a set of Monroe Reflexes i need to get installed onto the truck.
Clyde is officially on the road, as of today. Had to put a new master cylinder, and then new front brake hoses/calipers/rotors/pads, but i finally got it down on all 4 wheels, and driving. Put some fresh gas it it, and he's ready to drive to work tomorrow after a nice long cruise around town and a few jaunts outside the city limits. The idle is a hair low when the tuck gets warmed up, but other than that, seems to run good. Now, time to put some miles on Clyde and see if i can get the bugs all worked out.
Yep, good memories from 1962 - high school in my case. And, good ole Ray Stevens had The Streak: Don't look Ethyl. Too late, already been mooned. . Back when music was fun!

Truck decided to crap out on me in the most unusual way possible. Driving home from work on Saturday, got abot a block or so from work, it felt overly rich and sluggish. then died. pulled over, opened the hood, and fuel is DUMPING out of the lower half of the carb, the freshly rebuilt carb.
So Clyde got to ride home on the trailer, i plucked the carb off to take back to the guy who did the work for me. Lets just say i wasn't happy.
Also, i discovered an odd thing. When you press on the brakes, the master cylinder likes to push brake fluid out of the front of the master, between the top of the casting and the rubber seal of the cap. three different caps yielded the same result, so i'm going to warranty that as well.
