external oil coolers

i`m new to fte...been wrenching sinse the age of 13 and built my first 13 second street car at 15,but this is my first diesel.the 6.0 in my 2005 f 350 has a long list of problems that most of were adressed under the warranty. now is the time to do the arp head studs to repair the blown head gaskets. i am seriously considering IPR Research`s external engine oil cooler relocation system and full duty cycle coolant filter system, it looks to me like this would be a good system to install but at $1700.00 dollars for the complete kit that`s a lot of cash for a system thats relativly unknown..does anyone have any info or opnions on this system?? all responses would be greatly apreciated

If you really take your time and clean out the coolant system, then use a silicate-free ELC instead of Gold coolant, and add a coolant filer, odds of a repeat oil cooler are severely diminished. If you figure a stock oil cooler R&R is $400 in parts and 6 hours of labor @$75/hr (figure in paying yourself during repairs, you never know when something will fail and that might cost you time working the truck/at your real job/contracts/etc depending on what you do), then you'll have to have two repeat failures before you break even on the up front cost of the external oil cooler.

IPR just relocates a stock-style cooler, if you want to go with an external oil cooler that removes the chance of oil and coolant mixing at all, then the Bullet Proof Diesel air/oil cooler is the best option. Break-even on that is three oil cooler R&Rs, but it does get rid of any chance of the oil cooler itself failing and mixing the two fluid systems.

Personally, I'd rather pay less up front and keep using stock oil coolers. The only time I wouldn't is in an E-Series where the engine is buried up under the cab and it's more like 16 hours to R&R instead of an afternoon. On a truck, I'd rather spend $1500+ elsewhere right now, with the tradeoff being I might be out $400 in cash and a Saturday down the road. I don't make money with my truck and have others available to cover any downtime, so I'm fine with less now on the chance of a little more later.

This blurb is for their drop in replacement and not the external kit, but even still the clencher on choosing stock or Bullet Proof over IPR is this:

I would never put a part into an engine that diminishes it's capability compared to stock components. If the external cooler kit uses that part as the internal cooler replacement, I'm not entirely satisfied by their wording that their cooler is up to snuff.

Here's the Bullet Proof cooler:

They make an awesome replacement EGR cooler, their oil stuff is too expensive for me, but people who have them seem to swear by them.

external oil coolers

thanks for the input ... I think relocating the stock cooler from in the valley to the engine bay is a win-win because moving the cooler to the engine bay has to take a substantial amount of heat from the cooler, also having remote lines installed gives the option to install an air to oil cooler (i.e. bulletproof cooler)later. however i thought that liquid cooling was the way of the future,I have heard that that the bulletproof cooler was noisy and the two mounting options for me are not the greatest (in the fenderwell or behind the radiator) also how can replacing a stock oil cooler in 20 minutes be a bad thing?? my stock cooler has been flushed regularly and oil to coolant temp deltas rarely go over 15 degrees i have a coolant by pass filter system that has definately helped through the years. on a recent trailer towing trip i blew a head gasket so its off to the shop for a r p head studs. I was hoping to have some more input on the ipr cooler relocation.I will definately be installing the I P R full duty coolant filter with the servicable stainless steel element..more input is always welcome ...this is my first diesel powered vehicle (to bad i did`nt do enough research on the 6.0 )if i had i probably would hav bought a dodge, but i bought fhis ford and absolutly love it.any help to get to 300,000 miles would be great!!!

The external oil coolers are a solution in search of a problem IMO. I can think of a lot of stuff that I would rather spend 2,400 on than that, especially when the stock setup has been proven to work just fine provided you keep the cooling system clean.

I was talking about using the FTE search tool right at the top of the page
This should work from this link Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - Search Results

They have had some bad press to put is simply and they left a bad taste with some people.
