Im having trouble with my 6.0 on start up when cold...Before cranking over i let the glow plugs turn on then i crank the truck, it turns on but for a bit it coughs and throws out black smoke like theres raw fuel then as it gets hot it stops and runs perfectly fine...On my edge programmer its throwing codes for each cylinder saying "Injector Circuit Low"
You'll need to check your FICM volts at KOEO and while cranking. I'm guessing your FICM is toast or at the very least on it's way out.
A redneck way to also test the FICM is to use a good hair dryer or heat gun and heat up the FICM before starting and seeing if that helps with the cold start running.
Also, having your unit repaired at FICMrepair.com is WAY better than buying a new one (unless you don't mind spending the money and buy BPD's re-engineered FICM).
KOEO voltage should be no less than 47 volts. If you have 47 or more volts on that test watch FICM voltage as you try and start the engine. If it dips below 47 volts replace it. Also on your scanner you will have all 8 cylinder codes for low voltage. Ford offers a "half shell" FICM for a lot less than a complete one for about half the price. And the half shell doesn't need programming.
