what are the chances??

the 04 had a sticking right rear caliper and the rotor did not look too good, so i took the loaded caliper and rotor off the parts truck and put it on.

go out for a test ride after bleeding, and this one is hanging up too.
after a few miles and brake applications, the truck starts slowing down, hopping, and you can smell the brakes. get out and shoot the rotor with the infrared, and it is 400 degrees.

i sure will be glad when i get all the bugs out of this damn truck.

i think i need a bigger can of raid!!

Well thats a bummer. I have never had a caliper stick on my 04 (knock on wood) or my old 01 but I know some people who have this problem all them time!!!

That's a bummer. On the next one, you might want to replace the brake hose too. Sometimes they'll collapse internally and cause issues.
If the system is already open (for another round of caliper play) it's just a few bucks more.

Good Luck.

the only reason for using the used caliper is because the truck is getting a dually rear with the larger brakes.
i figured there was no reason to buy a new caliper when it is only going to be on the truck for a month or so when i have a complete truck to scavenge parts from.

I agree with ^^^^ Sounds like a bad hose.

Has the brake fluid ever been changed is it nasty black? If yes that could be
why the piston is stuck. I like to do a full fluid exchange about every two years.
I had a used Explorer that had some anti-lock problems and you should seen the crap
that came out of the lines when I did a flush and the problem went away. And I still
would not dismiss the hoses. Could be both. Been There Done That. They act like balloons
and reapply the pressure when you take you foot off the peddle.

So far on my 06' F-350 I have done the rear brakes twice, once on the fronts, replaced both calipers on the front and the RR the first time(rear caliper froze up after changing the pads), then a month ago was getting a pounding vibration when applying the brakes, was the rear rotors this time, changed them, new pads, went 20 miles LR caliper froze up,,,,ahhhh,,remove it and exchange it, making sure to apply anti-seize to the bleader,,,seems like up here in New England the Caliper piston get pretty corroded, and when compressing back in for New pads, they hang up! Just turned 80k 2 days ago!

Interesting. I also had my right rear caliper stick. At the time, I figured it was because my truck had sat basically undriven for two years while I was in Afghanistan. I replaced both rear calipers, just to be prudent.

that is what happened with this one too Stuart.
the truck has sat unused for the past 5 years after the cab got crushed by a falling tree, and then caught on fire after wires got cut and shorted out.
i finally got it all sorted out and back together.
it only has 12,000 miles on it.

I got rebuild kits for my calipers for around $9 a piece. Just a thought, and they are easy to rebuild.

well, went over to my buddies this morning and rummaged around in his parts shed till we found a caliper that the pistons compressed by hand. popped it on and bled the brakes and all is well again.
