Well guys the eccentric on my cam for my fuel pump is either gone or messed up and my truck died on me today. I know all about the different screw pin sizes (3/8 or 7/16) and the dowel pin lengths. My truck as you know is a 1978 F250 with a 400 in it that is bone stock. Does anyone know for sure which eccentric I need? I have yet to take a look at it but I'm trying to order the parts before I tear the truck apart. Also I'm trying to avoid paying a bunch of money for this thing. I know Summit sells it (or did sell it) for around $88 I thought. However in another thread on here someone said I could get it new from a Ford parts house for as little as $25...Which price figure is more accurate to what I'm probably going to pay?
Question. what makes you think the eccentric is bad? it comes in 2 pieces and is held in with a 3/8-16 x 1-1/2" bolt. if the eccentric isn't turning the bolt would have had to back out. If it backed out all the way I think it would have fallin' down into the timing chain and then you would have had real problems. Does the engine still turn over and is there compression at the cylinders? never heard of the pin shearing off the cam. in the book of the exploded view the basic part # is 6287.
I would be much more inclined to say the fuel pump has failed. You had best remove the two bolts and pull the pump before you condemn the eccentric cam.
I doubt the eccentric is your problem. I would tend to agree with HighboyMac, I would look at the fuel pump first.
However, if you do end up needing the eccentric.
D0AZ-6287-A outer eccentric
D0AZ-6287-B Inner eccentric
20522-S8 Bolt 3/8"-16 X 2"
I could only locate one dealer that had both the inner and outer eccentrics
B & B Ford Auto Parts, Bronx, NY has 1 each (718) 892-1186
I located 52 other outer eccentrics but B & B is the only one that also had the inner.
Have you trouble shot it and are sure it is a lack of fuel delivery issue and not electricial?
If so then yes with the rest, and replace the fuel pump first. When you install the new one you should have some pressure on the pump arm, that lets you know you have it installed correctly.
Meaning pump arm under the eccentric cam, start the top bolt first and after about half way in, the pull down on the pump and start the bottom one.
Put a clear line on the intake side of the pump and in a 2 or 5 gal gas can setting right next to the front tire. Connect the output side to (the inline filter that is a smart thing to have) the carb and turn it over.
If it pulls fuel and runs its installed correctly....
