ok this is the story.
ive got a 75 f250 4x4 with a 1969 lincoln 429 in it
fresh rebuilt 1500 miles.
ive been getting this noise from the timing cover so i checked it out and found out that the fuel pump cam which holds the cam shaft timing gear in place was almost fallin out.
i run an electric fuel pump so it doesnt get used, im wondering if it came out because the lack of a fuel pump lever to keep it tight... and if so can it be removed, and replaced with a large washer or round peice of metal. or will this throw off the balance of the cam?
what can i do to keep this from occuring again... it was almost as hard to take that ***** out as it was to put the motor in.
also another question... i like to use permatex super weatherstrip adhesive (#81731) for all my gaskets
i was recently told this was not a good idea... some one tell me if im wrong, or is it ok to use that stuff for my gaskets. it seems to work good..
thanks guys

Not using a mechanical fuel pump did not cause the bolt to back out of the cam. It probably wasn't tightened correctly. I would reuse the old fuel pump eccentric, clean the mounting bolt real good, add a couple of drops of red loctite and torque it to 45-50 lbs. ft. You could use a flat washer if it was hardened. The eccentric is easier to find. We used to see this problem a lot, especially after timing chain replacements and engine rebuilds.
Also the weatherstrip adhesive works for me, in moderation. You definately know its there when gasket removal is called for, but it doesn't squish out.
ok that gives me somewhere to start, thank you very much.
another question...
i just noticed stamped on the side of the block the numbers 460
this engine was said to be a 429
i got it out of a 69 montego which was way totaled. for $800
he had the reciepts for the parts used but not the work "he lost them"
the engine is new.
im beginning to wonder if i did get such a great deal tho.
ive had a constant hesitation problem.. and now the motor which was said to be a 429 has 460 stamped on the block on the drivers side front above the oil pan
does this mean anything or are these numbers something else?
thanks again
