O/D light flashing
I have an '03 w/ the 7.3L. Today the tranny stopped shifting up out of 2nd. And the O/D light flashes.
There are no other MIL lights on.
I have do some searching here and some say the VSS (Variable Speed Sensor) is bad, some say there is a connector on the passenger side that needs cleaning, and some say there is a solenoid just inside of the tranny bottom that needs replacing.
So, what shall I do?
Choose the easiest to get to and if that doesn't fix it it must be the other and at least then you know it's in proper working order and won't become an issue down the road
Since the O/D lamp was flashing, you have a fault that the PCM has detected. Get the scanner out and get the fault codes, then you'll have additional information upon which to build a diagnosis.
The codes (which I saw you posted on another site) point towards a problem with applying the direct clutch. That makes sense because the direct clutch is the one that needs to come on to shift 2-3.
Does reverse work? That also uses the direct clutch, but through a different hydraulic path. If reverse works then most likely you have a stuck shift valve in the valve body. If reverse doesn't work then the problem is most likely a failed direct clutch, or possibly a loose feed bolt under the valve body.
I just love when people say to just change parts until you find it. That only works if you have unlimited time and unlimited money. That is the WORST way to fix any problem. The only ones that do that are the ones that have NO IDEA how to fix a vehicle.

Yes reverse works.
And yet back yard mechanics have been fixing problems one part at a time since cars were invented. It's the American way.
