I have an 04 Excursion v10 with 170K on odometer. I am having trouble with transmission shifting into 3rd. When I take off it shifts fine to 2nd, but it will not go into 3rd as it should. I can back off throttle and reaccelerate a coulple of times and then it will shift fine all day long. The OD light is not blinking but I did scan for codes and there is a soft code P1741 - there is no light on dash illuminated. Just wondering if this sounds like a valve body problem or shift solenoid. I am out of town and can't ohm test solenoids til I get home. Thanks
That code has nothing to do with a 2-3 shift problem.
You could have a sticky shift solenoid, a sticky shift valve, or a failing direct clutch. If it is the clutch I would also expect delays shifting into reverse, as reverse also uses the direct clutch.
I doubt that checking resistance on the solenoids will tell you anything. If it is a bad solenoid it is mechanically sticking, the coil is probably fine.
Thank you Stewart and Mark for your replies. The chart I have shows P1714 to be related to Shift Solenoid A. I wasn't expecting the ohm test to really show me anything but figured I would at least start there, and you are correct - they tested fine.
Reverse is fine, no hesitation at all.
When I get back home I will look into more. We have parked it for now.
Tons of the problems with the 4R100 are the feed bolts come loose and cause no shifts, poor shifts late shifts etc etc etc. I'd check them first and while you'll in there add new separator plate gaskets and a TransGo HD shift kit best $120 I ever spent on my F350 hands down
