tree limb trimming question?

I have about 20 trees in my front yard. some of the limbs are hanging low enough that I can't get the riding mower under them to cut the grass. Would it hurt the life of the trees if I were to cut the low branches as long as I didn't cut the main trunk of the trees? sorry for the silly question but I know next to nothing about trees except they grow leaves in the spring and lose them in the fall.

They should be fine if it's just a couple. Just start out by cutting about a third of the way through on the underside about 12" away from the trunk, and then cut from the top just beyond that. That way, when the limb starts breaking towards the end of the cut, the piece it peels off won't go down to the trunk. After the limb is dropped, cut the stub back close to flush with the trunk.

Ya, what kind of trees? If they're any type of pine, you can trim them, but they won't look right.Do you have any arborists around, or a forester?

I limb mine up all the time. Haven't killed any yet. I usually wait until winter when the trees are dormant. Pruning properly done is good for the tree. Good luck.

Most trees do well with a spring trimming. It promotes growth in other areas of the tree and promotes a healthier tree.
