I have been trimming a silver maple and an oak back to get rid of all the misstletoe which is choking them down. I think the oak may recover ok but I am worried about silver maple. This area is infested with misstletoe so if I plant new trees in the place of these (in the case they don't make it) I am sure to have the problem again. Climbing trees is no fun and I can't afford hiring somone with a bucket truck.
Does a species of hardwood exist that resists misstletoe and puts off good shade? Fast growing is preferable. I would appreciate any insight on this.
try some kudzu, the mistletoe won't have a chance....
(ducking and running now)
No, really, Some tree species appear resistant to broadleaf mistletoe. Bradford flowering pear, Chinese pistache, crape myrtle, eucalyptus, ginkgo, golden rain tree, liquidambar, sycamore, and conifers such as redwood and cedar are rarely infested. Check with your local extension office for other species.
