We have 5 evergreen type of bushes around our concrete patio in the front of out house. These bushes are a 4' X 4' square and 4' tall. I have spread the branches open with my hands and noticed tons of dead branches inside. I saw an article in the paper the other day about brush care and they recommend trimming out all of the dead stuff. So that is what I have been trying to do. Will this allow new growth to come through? Some of the branches look dead but yet are green on the ends. Of course if I trim all of those too, there won't be much left. ANother question is, our house faces the North, and these bushes have been growing towards the house in order to get sunlight. They are really uneven due to this. Is there a way to tie them up to try and straighten the growth? Last year we tied a rope around them, just to make them look even, but wondered if there was a better way.
You can stake them with 2" X 2" posts. Use wire between, and cut sections of old garden hose over the wire to protect the trunk of the shrubs.
Most evergreens have dead stuff inside of the outer green layer - DO NOT cut the branches off.
Over time, the dried dead stuff will drop down along the inside to the base of the shrubs. If you really want to - shake the shrubs to help the old stuff fall to the bottom.
It sounds like a Juniper. Try trimming, and a little bit of food wouldn't hurt either. the bad news- if it is Junipers- ripping them out is just a question of time, and you won't believe how deep/far the roots go. A pickup with a winch is about what it'll take.
