Any one have some spare ( 6) door hinge bolts/ screws for a '48-'52 ? The stock truck cab is nearing the paint booth YEAH!! Thanks , Denny
I ordered an entire new set from Midwest Early Ford and got them in the mail today. Looks identical to the stock screws and includes washers as well. Ended up being around $15.00 including shipping.
I have pinched my thumb web too many times with an hammer impact wrench and have more than I can count bolts break off just as I was about to get them out. In the '48-52 trucks there's a 1/4" triangle backing plate the bolts screw into and you can get them out fairly easy if you have to to drill and retap them.
How is that triangle plate attached? I've snapped 2 of the 3 screws in the hinge. Is it easy to remove the plate to either remove the screws or replace the plate entirely? It's the lower hinge, so I'm wondering if I need to remove the brace at the lower cowl to get at it.
While removing the door off of my brothers F1 there was one screw that would not break loose. Using hand impact finally got the others, plus lots of liquid wrench. Anyway, I ended up drilling with 1/4" and then using a 5/16" left hand bit to remove rest. Yes it did mess up the threads enough that I had to use a nut on it. Easy to reach down inside the brace to hold nut. Ace Hardware had the correct 5/16" countersunk hex bolts in SS.
It's been a while since I've removed the triangle brace in a truck but I think they're held in with a sheet metal bracket. They're fairly easy to get to, you might have to break a tack weld but I'm not sure. I do know I got to them though, got them out, drilled them out and retapped them.
The other (3) I am able to get a nut on it, and I am going to try to weld the nut on the broken stud and see if I can try to work it out of the hole... if not, I will drill those out as well....
The good thing about so many folks posting solutions is - well, I will try another one instead. Instead of welding a nut onto the broken bolt WHILE it is still in the door jamb / pillar, I will see how hard it is to simple cut the triangle out and THEN weld a bolt on and try to unscrew the broken bolt while it is in the vise.
I will let you know how it goes as I need to do this in the next day or two....
Just an update: the triangle plate is held in place with a cage type of assembly made from light sheetmetal. Holding a center punch on any of the broken screws and hammering will bend the cage enough so that the plate can easily be removed.
I'd insert a picture of the assembly but it's not clear how to make the attachment.
