Fail emissions :(

Ok I have a 2002 7.3L Excursion 140k. Just moved to WA where diesels have to be emission tested I failed due to the opacity being 52% with a limit of 40%. What can I due to lower the smoke output so I can pass. I have 2 weeks before my tags are expired. I so far have changed the fuel filer, changed the oil, cleaned my air filter and am running injector cleaner thru this tank. I know the truck has had a programmer used on it at some point in time by the previous owner and was not set back to stock before I bought it. I need to know what else I can do to lower the smoke output so I can pass without going to the dealer and having them program the truck back to stock for $108.

The tune is going to be your issue. Was the PCM re-flashed or is it chipped? If it is PCM I have no answer for you.

was thinking of trying this stuff:
AMSOIL Diesel Fuel Additive Concentrate

says it will reduce black smoke.

Might try the Amsoil but I wouldn't get your hopes up. My personal opinion is flash the PCM and that would allow you to upgrade to a custom tuner later. It would also be a longterm fix and not something you have to worry about at every emission test.

dealer has 3 week wait time so that's only a last resort for now. Just need it to pass then I have 2 years till the next one.

Sorry man...
There is no cheaper option for you if there is a toon stuck on your pcm.
Bite the bullet... get in the 3 week line... and have the dealer flash it...
Or send it in to dp tuner... i think they flash pcm's.
That might be faster... but i think they charge more than 108$... not certain there tho.

A stock '01 puts out about 1-2% opacity - perhaps a max of 5%. I'd get it reflashed to stock, pass the test, and then figure out what to do next.

You might try and find a used PCM at a junkyard or classifieds. Once you pass put your other one back in if you like its tune. Plus the spare PCM would give you the option to run a different chip down the road...

thought of that but excursions have a chipped key so would still require a trip to dealer =/

Haul out your PCM and call DP for a re-flash. Maybe stock tune, maybe something they can suggest to fit your goals. Faster and cheaper then your other options, plus you're dealing with experts.

My two cents.

I think my brutha's are slippin'... You might at least check to make sure a couple of key things are working right: Do you have boost leaks? Do you have exhaust leaks before the turbo? I didn't see gauges in your mod list, but I assume you have them. Can you build boost? Are your EGT's high?

Assuming all that stuff is OK, you might consider another option: Buy a chip. That's more than $108, but I didn't see where you're looking for a cheap solution, I saw where you didn't want to drop money putting your truck back to stock. A chip will override whatever is in the PCM, and you'll not only know what tune(s) you have, you'll get to decide.

My $.02.

Ahhh, OK. Does it seem to smoke less after the work you've done? If so, maybe getting it tested again is the cheapest option? If you like way it runs, spending money to get it back to stock, while the next cheapest option in the near term, isn't going to make you happy.

Hard to say what helped (oil change, Clean Filetrs, or the amsoil) but retested today and scored a 10.8% well below the 40% allowed. Thanks for all your help!
