Black Smoke

New guy here. Recently purchased 2002, 7.3L, 350, w/ @ 75000 mi. Had hard start the other day with white smoke. Jumped terminals of GPR and fired right up. That day, changed oil to Rotella 5-40 synthetic, and picked up GPR from IH dealer.
Tested GPR next morning with meter, voltage bouncing. Tried to start with no luck. Disconnected batteries and changed GPR. When batteries (believe original Motorcraft) disconnected, batt. eyes turned red/orange? Cleaned batt. terminals and reconnected. Starts right up. Took for drive and of course get heavy foot. Lots of black smoke. PO said truck had chip in it, under dash, and would need removed before emissions test. Have never looked, but read about PCM near parking brake. Prior to these events, hard acceleration was good results, (felt same as now I think) but no smoke. I then install new air filter, and still smoki'n.

Question is, what causes change? No Mods to the truck that I'm aware of except the chip. All stock gauges.
  1. Could changing to synthetic have anything to do with smoke? Better injector operation?
  2. Could disconnecting battery during GPR change have done some sort of resetting of PCM?
  3. Is this a good thing?
Will try to contact PO about chip, but any ideas in the meantime? In advance, thanks for the help.

Left phone message for Previous Owner. Put couple hundred miles on today, with multiple key (on/off) cycles. Still smoking, but might not be as heavy when you get on it, and still confused as to what caused change. Any ideas?

Also stopped by IH dealer where I bought replacement CPS last week. Again told them I needed 1825899C93. Again they told me that part number has been up-dated to 1821720C99. Mentioned 7.3L and T444. He was aware and said it's correct part for elevation here.

The pcm is down by the parking brake. You will see it, it is a silver box. It doesnt just pull out so do not try to pull the pcm out. When you locate the pcm on the part you can see, there will be hole with a circuit board hooked to it(if chipped). It may have tape over it. Someone may have better directions with pictures that would make it alot easier to locate.

The black smoke thing, i have no clue what to say why it is smoking now and why it wasnt before except that maybe its a switchable chip and you switched it to a higher setting.

John, I see the silver box (pcm) near the parking brake. It has a black plastic cover over it with @ 5"x5" square hole in plastic cover. Can't see any "holes, circuit boards, tape"... Just the side of the pcm through the 5"x5" opening in plastic. The plastic cover looks to have 2 @ 7mm screws holding cover on. Do you know if this cover was removed, I would see circiut board and possibly chip?

Thanks for your help.

The best way to tell if there is a chip is to pull the pcm out. Here are some instructions for removing the pcm.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/wiki2/ti...p?articleId=31

Follow the instructions closely because it could cost you a pcm!
