I have a 97 F-Super Duty with an automatic tranny. Today the truck's speedometer stopped working, it started shifting hard and the overdrive off light started blinking. I checked fuse #18 and replaced my vss, but the problem continued. Anybody have any ideas for me?
have you done any work to the dash recently? I had my dash apart once and didn't get the center harness in the instrument cluster (directly behind the odometer) plugged in right and that happened to me.
and I don't remember the fuse number, but the fuse you checked is in the dash fuse panel toward on the far right side, right? my previous owner had a plow on my truck which I removed. the had plugged an add-a-fuse into the speedo fuse slot (again I don't remember the number). when I removed the plow harness, I took the add-a-fuse out, but forgot to put the speedo fuse back in. ...got the same hard shifting.
not sure what else could lead to your problems. its clearly a VSS signal issue. you may have to check continuity from the plug at the sensor up to the instrument cluster - which would involve taking out the cluster. not difficult, but a pain.
