My speedometer and odometer has malfunctioned twice now. All the other gauges and lights are working fine. The first time, the odometer blanked out and the speedometer dropped to zero. I was going about 45 mph? I stopped, turned it off, waited 10 seconds, restarted it and it worked fine. This was last week. Yesterday, I was on the highway at 68mph. The odometer blanked out again and this time the speedometer went to max/ ~90 mph. Off course the cruise control disengaged. I was going to do a restart at the next intersection, but in about 30 seconds. They both started functioning again. Would anyone have any experience with this? Is it possible to get the cluster serviced?
An easy place to start is to check 10 amp fuse #18 in the in cabin fuse panel, as it protects the speedometer. It is probably a long shot, but maybe it has worked loose, and is loosing contact. Make sure the "socket" is grabbing the spades of the fuse. I had a bad wire to the speed sensor in the rear axle that would make the speedometer quit, but the numbers still showed in the cluster, just didn't accumulate miles.
Take out your cluster and clean the plug contacts on the rear of your cluster. They may have dirt, grime, corrosion that is limiting contact giving you the on and off issues with the cluster. It is not hard at all to remove the bezel and take it out. Just a few bolts and screws. If you need help doing that let me know.

I checked the the fuse and it's socket, all good.
I will look into the VSS circuit, but I don't believe that's the issue due to the fact the odometer is blank when it happens. That
screams a power issue.
I have had my instrument display out a few times. I'm hesitant to remove it now since it's cold here in NE Wisconsin. 20 year
old plastic + cold temps = cracking. I'm leaving the first week of January for Arizona for two months. Maybe just do it out in
the desert? No speedometer or cruise would suck on the 2000 mile trip out though.
Has anyone had experience with any of the instrument rebuild/repair vendors?

I'll just say this before I move on. I have never heard of the PSOM being anything besides yup or nope . I had a broken wire to the VSS (a soft spot not visible.). The strands of wire were broken & corroded inside of the plastic wire . It lost contact occasionally , usually on a bump in the road or at high speed when my tires were out of balance . The speedometer would return to zero & the odometer went blank as well . I should have come here & asked for help . If you drive it with no spedo running an auto , PCM will go into protect mode by raising line pressures & not shift properly .

The zf5 in my signature designates a manual.
I checked and reworked the electrical loom when I built the entire fuel system. I KNOW the wires are good. I also rebuilt the entire loom on my engine when I rebuilt it this past summer.

There ya go .So why are you here asking for help ? I Have a new PSOM in a cluster that I bough to fix mine if you are interested . I didn't need it .
OVER RE action4478, if someone disagrees with you. Are you able to have a conversation without stress, emotional attachment or drama?

If it's NEW, when did you purchase it? I have been told new PSOMs are not available, no surprise.
Poor baby , I didn't come here looking for help , You did, I doubt you will post the fix .
