Arrow Help! Mazda 5spd problems

Hello Everyone, i am new to the forum and i was hoping that you will be able to help me out with my tranny problem. any help would be incredibly appreciated! thank you.

Truck: f150
Year: 1989
Engine: Inline six
Tranny: Mazda 5spd

Problem: Since i bought this truck the reverse has worked only sometimes. I can shift into the reverse slot easily with no grinding and little to no resistance, however it only gets into gear sometimes, most of the time when i just start the truck from cold.

Noticed Damages: I have noticed that the shifter "bushings" (thin metal washers around the shift ball) are damaged and all torn up and i was wondering if this could be causing the problem? i fully intend on replacing them in the next week.

What i have Heard:
-"The synchro is out on the reverse" even though i thought first and reverse don't have synchros.
-"The tranny fluid may be wrong"
-"The Shifter or linkage is damaged and causing the truck not to fully push the shift sleeve onto the reverse gear"

Any help would be incredibly appreciated!!! thank you.

I can't remember if reverse on the M5OD is synchronized or not. I know it is on the ZF in my Corvette. Always struck me as odd, do you REALLY need a synchronized reverse?

In any case, another common problem with these transmissions is that the slave cylinder will start to go out and it won't disengage the clutch completely. This could cause problems as well. You wouldn't notice it so much on the synchronized gears, but on gears without syncrhos it could cause quite a bit of grinding.

I'm not sure about synchro's in reverse either, All I know is if I don't get it into reverse all the way, I have to clear mine in neutral & try again. Clutch issues can be, as stated a big problem. Your slave cylinder is external I believe. What I read here, they are hard to bleed but can be bled. Check master cylinder also. Check for any leaks.
If I remember correct when you buy the external slave cylinders buy the pre-bled ones.

Dunno about '89 but in '95 it's an internal, concentric POS. I hate that design. Cheap crappy plastic part breaks and you've got to pull the whole darn transmission to replace it.

I much prefer external!

I think the early ones were external. I know my 95 is internal. So is my 99 Dodge 4x4 V-10, 5 speed.

If O'Reilly's website has it right, the '89 is external.

Wonder why they would replace a perfectly good design with a part that costs more, is harder to replace, and is more prone to failure. Probably because they can charge more to change it!

Mine sorta does the same I usually just slam it to the right then down hard and it locks in good if I do it soft it won't go. Also I can't start it up and go straight to reverse I have to push the clutch in and go to any other gear then without releasing the clutch go to reverse or else it'll grind.

One thing they aren't real good trannys. I baby mine because I'm well aware they leave a lot to be desired.
When they work they are fine but not very strong.

All of the M5ODs are internal slave as are the ZF5s that are used behind 300/302/351W engines. Only the Diesel and 460 ZF5s have external slave cylinders.
