I bought a '93 F150 4x4 this past Sunday. It has the 5.8 and E4OD. Yesterday when I started it up and drove to the tire shop for some wheel balancing, it shifted VERY hard with each shift, so hard that it concerned me. I know very little about transmissions in general, and this one specifically, aside from it being electronically controlled.
This afternoon, I drove it again and it seemed to be shifting more "normally" without shifting anywhere nearly as hard as it did yesterday.
Any ideas on what I should check first? I bought a filter kit and will change the filter/fluid (including torque converter) as soon as I'm able. I'm having ankle replacement surgery (again) tomorrow and will be down for 3-4 months, but want to be ready to get this sorted out as soon as possible once I'm back on my feet, so I'm trying to get all the information on it now.
Does the OD light work when you press the button on the end of the shift handle? Does the light flash when the trans is shifting hard?
The first thing to do is to read the codes. You can get a code reader that can read these codes at any auto parts store for about $25. Or you can find instructions on the 'net to read them with a voltmeter. Once you have the codes then we can tell you where to start looking. Without codes all I know to tell you is that something is wrong.
Thanks Mark! I will get a code reader (any recommendations on which one is best?). I'm having surgery today and will be recovering the next few at a minimum. I will let you know as soon as I get the codes.
