Well I've been lurking FTE ever since I got my truck and I finally came across a situation where I can't find a thread already about it. So I decided I might as well join. I have a 99.5 7.3 CC SB it was a salvage/restore title so regardless the electrical is a little different. You ever watch that episode of King of the Hill where they're at Bill's house and they flip the light switch to turn the kitchen light on but instead the microwave comes on? Well that's how I feel with my truck sometimes. The only window that seems to work right now is the rear passenger window it will go up and down. Now when I try to roll down either the front driver or passenger window they may go down a very little bit and then stop. When it stops I will hear a clicking coming from the fuse box from the relay for the auto down. Now when the relay clicks my dome light will all of the sudden come on. I can reset all of this by pushing window switch up. Right now I have my driver's side door torn apart and I'm testing my switch. Hopefully that's what it is instead of the expensive GEM.
Sounds like the voltage wire to your windows is making a path to your overhead lights possibly. Check the wiring in the foot channel by prying up all of your plastic pieces in each doorway and look for problems there.
Could also very well be a GEM problem.
It was 2002 that the VSM replaced the GEM. So you do have a GEM in your 99 truck. Look to see if you have any water coming in from the bottom of the windshield onto your GEM module.
I will check to see if the voltage wire is messing with the light. I did take the switch off and hooked up a little toggle switch to the blades and jumped it that way however it yielded the same results as it did with the actual switch so I know its not the switch now. I remember having a little water coming in on the top of the front window on the drivers side. That may be it. Have any advice on pulling out the fuse block and testing it?

After you remove the bolts from the front of the fuse box under the dash, go to the back of the fuse box with I think an 11mm driver and remove each of the recessed bolts going through the center of the two connectors that brings all of the wires into the back of the fuse box. It will take many, many turns of your wrench to get each of them out. Lastly remove the two wire connectors on the left side of the fuse box that are actually plugged directly into the GEM. Then remove the fuse box and GEM together.
Once out, separate the GEM from the fuse box and inspect your GEM carefully, especially the connectors between the two. If there's any sign of moisture, plan on getting a new GEM or resort to getting a used GEM after you have identified the numbers on the side of your original GEM.
