Hello, I am currently putting my manifold swap on hold while my other car gets work done to it.
While that is going on, I have torn apart the pickup bed and am a little dismayed by what I have found. The rails are not all there, and there is a tremendous amount of rust everywhere. As I am rebuilding this bed, I will post pictures
: I have a random orbital sander and some 60 grit pads. I want to little by little sand away the rust. I know that I need to put primer on right after I sand to bare metal. Is there a spray can of primer that would be good for doing a little at a time without a painting booth?
I went to ppg and got epoxy primer, and catalyzer for it, but I would need to use a compressor, hvlp gun, painting booth, respirator, and I would rather only do that for the final actual painting process.
So yeah I guess my question is what is a good spray can primer that is good for bare metal that had nothing but rust all over it?
The auto paint sup;iers should have 3x primer in a spray can....when you activate the hardner and shake it combines and is a good as anything you would spray with a gun.....just check for compatability for the paint you are going to use...FYI it is also only good for spraying for 1-2 hours after activation...
Rustoleum sells am automotive primer sealer in spray bomb form. It has held up well on the back end of my 70 project has been on hold for over a year. Get it a Walmart in the auto department..... typically lower priced than Autozone, Oreillys, HD, etc.
Would like Home Depot or something have it? I would feel like a fool going back to ppg...
nooooooooooooooooooooooo
don't feel bad going back to the PPG guys, you are not the first & they will probably think, "Gosh, I wish I would have mentioned it to the guy"..............and definitely don't use anything else but from their product line or you can easily have compatability issues...
Awesome thank you!! My friend's dad has a painting booth, but it's 10 miles away, and like I said, I want to do this little sections at a time...
This will be great! Do you recommend full respirator? Or just the face masks?
It's not catalyzed so it's a bit safer. A respirator (with filter cartridges) is a good idea but no matter what have good ventilation in your work area. Btw, dust masks are not respirators.
I will try to return the paint for now, although I think I may have already lost the receipt..! I may just do the rustoleum for now and when I do finally get around to painting, just sand it lightly beforehand
Another question: is the primer sealer black in color as indicated by the lid? (I am painting my truck meadow green eventually but it being black for the time being might look nice too)
