I have a 79 f150 that I use for the trips to the mountains and as my 'beater' truck. It has small rust spots all over it ranging in size from 1/8 in. 1/4. I would like to give it a really cheap paint job. Should I just sand it to bare metal? Or could I use a rust inhibitor as a primer and paint over that.
Any paint is only as good as whats under it so my suggestion is to sand it down to bare metal where the rust is. Treat the bare spots with a rust inhibitor wash, then epoxy prime complete and paint with your choice of topcoats. There are cheaper epoxy primers available from NAPA and others, you don't have to go with the most expensive brands.
Thanks for the reply, I have access to a garage with an angle grinder so I'll just use that with a coarse pad. whats an inhibitor wash? Is it something I can pick up at the parts store? I don't have a spray gun but I have about 10 cans grey enamel and about 10 cans of oil based primer. I was thinking after I sand it I would go over the metal with metal etching primer, than oil based primer, and finish with enamel. Or would it be cheaper to get an electric paint gun?
You could spend $hundreds$ on rattle cans and not get the finish you could even with a cheap HVLP spray gun.
I am doing my truck with a gun setup I bought off of ebay for $50 shipped. It came with 2 nozzles (1 for priming, 1 for topcoat, clearcoat)
I used a 15gallon 3hp compressor (craftsman) and it never gave out on me. It kept the pressur eup just fine, and I shot the entire truck, bed, interior and all in one whack.
I just scuffed the OEM paint on the 1977 FORD Ranger. If there was rust I went to bare metal, then etched primed, then used a urethane primer over the entire truck. It is awesome stuff. You cant go wrong with the urethane primers and topcoats.
To add use an 80 grit sanding disk to to remove the rust, fill in the marks with spot putty or bondo for the deeper ones and rent a compresor and paint the thing. Sounds like you are on a low budget. This style of paint job will not last to long and the rust will come back, however maybe this is all you are looking for. Have fun.
