Great. Having a pump that needs replaced after 100,000 is bad enough. Are 90cc pumps at least that dependable? Or do they have shortened life spans compared to a stock pump. This sheds a whole new light on my build project, and I understsnd perfectly well why you went with a 12V retrofit. I can't blame you one bit, and I, for one, appreciate your continuing contribution to this forum.*

Basically. I'm sure there is a possibility to get a little bit more longevity from the pump, but it will never be anything more than a small fraction of the longevity you get with a stock or slightly turned up pump. Its just not mechanically capable.

Also, yes, as of right there we have not been able to track down any more H&R's to build these pumps. Stanadyne built these 8cyl DB4 H&R sets for a marine diesel shop, who has since quit using DB4's, and gone back to DB2's, so new supply is not likely to happen.

When my DB4 was at 120cc's without the EDM work I made about 270rwhp on fuel iirc. Yes, it broke the cam pin, but we never seen thrust plate wear at those levels. That would lead me to believe we could probably get a decently reliable pump together that will support about 275rwhp, MAYBE 300.

My pump that did 132cc's with EDM work that kept it at 125+cc's all the way to governor was close to locking up after only 15,000 miles, it had so much wear. We weren't sure if it was just my pump or what, so when Racin' pulled his pump apart, which also had low miles, found the same type of wear.

If you were willing to pull the pump every 10-15k and pay to have it serviced you would be fine... I'm just not willing to do that for a 400hp motor, and as I said... if a freak occurrence happens that locks the rotor and breaks it, you're up a creek.

As for the 80-90cc DB2's, yes I think they are reliable.

Looks like my next diesel when I return to the diesel world will probably be an 00-03 7.3 PSD. Decent enough power levels for my needs with very few mods. Love the cummins, but don't want to drive a dodge....don't want the effort of stuffing it in a Ford.

Looking forward to seeing your swap though.

The idi that was built to drag race, they put an inline ip on it. what made you shy away from trying that
Second why the 12v over the 24v?

Because it's cheaper and less work to swap in a cummins than to rig a p-pump onto an IDI.

not really.we've all known for many years now, that if you wanted real modern type diesel engine performance, the idi wasn't the platform to start with.nothings changed.
you can't get blood from a turnip.the engines a great one.legendary in it's own right.like anything,it has reasonable limitations.
