I'm putting a tranny in as we speak it a 390 putting a c6 behind it and I have the metal ring that bolts up with the flex plate but don't know if it goes on the front of the flex plate or behind it against the crank also what's this ring even for
NO! That is incorrect. The flex plate goes on first then the reinforcing ring. The function of it was to spread the load over a larger surface area and reduce the chances of the thin flex plate cracking.
__Good to know you guys have that figured out. I was worried as i have two tranys installed with the plate on after the flex plate, i sure never wanted to pull them. __ __
