I have a 1993 non turbo 7.3L diesel with 279k miles on it. She's been pretty reliable but now something is wrong:
She's been smoking (blue/gray smoke) most of the time but reliable. I did notice running okay but as my errands progressed she'd run rougher once warm than in the start. I suspected injectors as at 279k miles I've never replaced them.
Today she died and I'm not sure what is going on. Fence project so multiple trips to the dump and hardware store. At end of errands she ran rough, lost power. On exit ramp foot was to the floor and no power @ 2k rmp. She'd come and go with power. Lost power/stalled. Put in neutral and tried to restart but no "wait to start" light??? She started but stalled soon after. Pulled into a lot waited 2-4 min & she restarted but needed to give her fuel. Made it 4 blocks, stalled again. Waited 2 min. Started again to pull into driveway. Put into park & stalled while running????
Not sure where to start. Is it electrical? Is it fuel related (clogged filter, etc)? Is it the injectors?
Any help in where to start is appreciated.
Thx! Lynn
Could be an air intrusion in the return line, but at that mileage its likely that your injection pump has failed. Pump and injectors should be replaced together.
I'd also check the lift pump, just to be sure - if it's not getting fuel to the IP, well, it won't work.
And heck, when you have it down and are working on it, if the lift pump seems at all worn, they're pretty cheap, and it's not a big deal to replace em.
my thoughts jump right to failing lift pump as well.this is what id be thinking if it happened to me.that or a bad fuel leak just opened up.a rusted out fuel line down on the frame rail or a pickup tube.something like this is where id investigate first.
test fuel flow from shrader valve when engine is running should flow well with slight pulse, if not, possible dirt in filter??, if it runs good cold may be tired ip.
smoke is not rings,,it will burn all the oil(fuel) the the rings leak in..valve guide's can make it smoke on start up..most often smokey idle is worn injectors,,my engine has 5grand on new injectors, and I run 50% oil in my fuel, no smoke. new injectors can be used on the moter if you decide to rebuild it later, its much cheaper try them first. 270k on the ip..congrats she might just run great...
Thanks for all the feedback. How do I diagnose if my ip is bad? What would be the trouble shooting sequence? How big of a job is this? Is a refurbished engine a better idea? Thanks again.
has the injector pump ever been changed?
at 279k miles, you definitely need injectors.
if the truck still has the original pump in it too, than it needs replacing. injector pump is usually a 100 to 150 thousand mile change, same with injectors. while it is not unheard of to get 300k out of them it is kind of rare for them to last that long.
Thank you Tom,
I have not replaced any of those parts and I don't believe the owner prior had either. That was also back in 1998 when I purchased the truck and it only had 130k on it. I guess this is what needs to be done. My BF is not going to be happy as it is a lot of work, it is from Ohio so has some scaling and rust. Good thing he is handy. Lol
pump and injectors in not that bad on these engines. the hardest part is getting into the engine bay, or doing the passenger side rear if it has a turbo.
i will take injectors and pump job on an IDI over a powerstroke any day.
around $700 for the IDI pump and injectors compared to $2,000 for a set of powerstroke injectors.
well if it turns out to be ip/injector/timing -aka idi tune up time,at nearing 300k id want to perform a compression test first before sinking the 700-1000 into the engine.you've got to rule out the small things first like making sure it's getting fuel pressure and volume to the ip.
used idi's typically go for tune up costs, but they probably need the tune up too making them closer to 2k engines.so if your idi truck is a 2wd you might just buy a whole better idi truck with lower miles or decide if it's just time to move onward with a newer truck now.it's time to explore and research all options after properly diagnosing though if it leads into some big money.

First thing is to replace the lift pump. It's only $25.
Second, if you don't want to spend a lot(and it's only an occasional driver), get a used IP from the JY. You can pick up some injectors either there, or a cheaply-rebuilt set off ebay for $150 which will /work/ well enough.
Remember, there's a big difference between 'runs well enough, gets fair gas mileage' and 'runs great, gets good gas mileage'.
