Need Help with Injectors Injection pump or.....

I have a 1994 idi factory turbo and been having some problems. In the morning i will start the truck (couple cranks and it turns over) some smoke comes out and while the high idle solenoid is kicked up everything is fine however when it comes off the thing smokes and runs ruff. When i start driving it everything goes away and acts as if nothing is wrong. In the afternoon when its warm it starts up but smokes and runs ruff. I have all ready done the return lines and glow plugs so its not that. I have heard two schools of thought injectors or injection pump....if anyone has any sort of clue i would love some help
thanks adam

So does it always smoke and run rough at idle? Even when it reaches temp? If it smokes and runs rough after starts, and every thing clears up after a few minutes, I would be inclined to say some injectors are leaking.

You could pull the pump and injectors and have them all tested. It's not that big of a job. I think I was charged about $150 for the pump testing, and like 50 for all the injectors...but that's been a while. My memory fails.

I would do every thing I could to be sure I didn't have a air intrusion issue. This will start a controversy here, but I installed an electric lift pump. This helps with priming the fuel system and will minimize the effect of air intrusion. If you have an electric pump, you can let it run a few minutes to flush the air from the lines which will help in hard starting.

Hope this helps some

this does help quite a bit, i already have the injectors on the way (its cheaper than the pump) and the smoke does clear up after its warm so the score now is 3 injectors 2 ip. I would be interested to know more about the electric pump your talking about though is that somthing you can get off of a diesel site or what......thanks again for the advice and help

When the return lines leak, they leak air into the fuel system which breaks the vacuum holding the fuel above tank level.

So the fuel in the fuel filter returns to the fuel tank.

When you try to start the engine, the air pocket makes the engine hard to start or not start at all until the lift pump refills the filter and pushes the air out.

Since you have a rough idle, but the engine is starting, I am going to say you are at an early stage of air intrusion.

When you replace the injectors, you will have the return lines off.
Replace them while they are off and install new O rings to replace them, two on each injector.
Also replace the rubber fuel line between each injector, the fuel filter return line and the IP return line.

Your air problems should then be over.

The electric pump is an electric fuel pump, 7 PSI max and 30 GPH min fuel flow the replaces the stock mechanical lift pump.
If you do this mod, you must remove the stock lift pump or you run the risk of filling the crankcase with diesel if the lift pump diaphram ruptures.
That could cost you an engine if it were to happen.
