Hey the shop at where I work has a 1999 e-350 with the 7.3
260,000km on her and she will stop running randomly. I can be in any gear in the auto tranny, ill be driving or stopped and she'll quit. It's not sputtering or anything, we think it's the ECM. She runs well when it is running. If it does quit running, il start right back up again.

This has a Cam Position Sensor odor to it. It's something like 30 bucks at the dealership and it's real easy to swap if you have a 10mm socket. Most members here carry a spare onboard because this was a recall issue. I'll bet you still have the original gray CPS that was recalled. It's on the very front of the motor, passenger-side/low from the water pump, the only thing with a cable on it.

I agree, it does sound like a CPS issue. However, the CPS that was recalled was the International black CPS that came in the truck off of the line. Ford replaced the black CPS with a gray one in the recall. The gray CPS' are much less likely to fail.
To the OP... Go pick up a new CPS from Ford or International and put it in. If it does not fix the issue, at least you will have a spare(which is highly recommended).
This may sound silly and overly simple, but I was having the same problem with mine and the fix ended up being to tighten up the battery terminals. I thought no way could that be the issue, I was mind set on it being a bad ground. But someone suggested it, so I tightened down on the terminals and haven't had that issue since. If nothing else it won't take but 5 minutes to check that off the possibilities list.
