Dropping mid-ship tank. I want to drop my tank, clean it, ck the sending unit and reinstall. The filler hoses look new and are soft. It looks pretty straight forward. Disconect sending unit wires, fuel outlet hose and filler hoses and lower it down. Can I detatch the filler neck hose at the inlet then pull them through the bed/frame? Looks like I can. Only ask because I cant see where they attatch to the tank so that looks easier.
From what I've gathered:
Ground out the sending unit to see if the guage pegs full. If it does then it is ok.
Clean or replace inlet "sock" on the pickup tube. Where do you find these??

Should I use some sort of tank lining kit?
Anything else?
V10,
It's probably been at least 10 years since I removed my mid-tank(line leak) but I think I just disconnected the filler hose and other things and lowered it down. There was also a tank support strap. This was on a 78 F-250. I don't know about other vehicles.
I've seen the "sock" for sale on several sites. Can't be hard to find. There would be nothing wrong with using a tank liner before reinstalling the tank, at least nothing that I know of.
I dropped my mid-ship tank in my 74 F350 about a month ago or so. I was amazed at how clean it was in it but I washed it out at the car wash anyway. I thought about lining it but after researching it and all of the poor reports about how it flakes, etc. I decided to keep it the way it came from the factory. I also ordered a new fuel sending unit from LMC but I think I've seen just the sock at LMC or Dennis Carpenter. I also replaced all the fuel lines and filler hose with new ones so the filler hose was curved but stiff. Dropping the tank was easy but re-installing it was a pain! My son and I must have dropped and raised the tank a million times (or so it felt) before getting it right. Here is what I advise:
1. Install new sending unit
2. Attach a lengthy amount of new fuel line from the source that goes to the fuel sending unit. Do not cut yet.
3. Reinstall tank- you must wedge it up back into the frame rail. Reattach the front just so it hangs. Same with rear strap. Do not tighten and leave it loose.
4. Attach the new filler hose to the filler tube(some lube helps).
5. Raise the tank with help or blocks. Reach through the frame rail and attach the filler hose to the tank inlet. This will be a challenge, especially if istalling a new stiff filler hose. Make sure to also set the metal plate between the filler hose and frame. Slowly twist the new filler hose onto the tank (again some lube will help).
6. Once the hose is installed, then raise and tighten the front nut and rear strap.
7. Install the fuel line to your fuel sending unit.
8. Also, I had a cable that runs along the length of the truck and it attaches to the front of the fuel tank. I forgot to reinstall it and it was hitting against the drive shaft. I was lucky that it didn't get caught up.
I had to drop my tank and replace the steel shroud. Removing the fuel filler line (And return) was pretty easy. Just remove it at the two closest hose clamps to the tank. They should be just outside the frame. You can read up on my removal and install of the mid tank here.

Where did you get that tanks skid pan ? Of course out where you live they are probably a dime a dozen if you know where to look. Someone should start making them again.
