1962 Brake light help

I just brang home my first truck today, a 1962 ford f100 flare side. I have some questions about the brake lights. They come on but they don't react to the brake pedal being pushed. I checked it out and everything looks to be connected, but was wondering if there's a sensor or something that I'm missing.
Thanks,
John

The most likely culprit is the brake light switch which screws into your brake master cylinder and has two electrical wires attached to it. These are famous for getting clogged up inside. They need clean brake fluid in the system to function correctly. Sometimes they can be cleaned out and made to work again, but they are fairly cheap to buy and easy to replace. Good luck!

Thanks! I see exactly what you're talking about. So if I go the route of cleaning out the master cylinder I'd have to bleed the brakes also, correct?

Also do you know the system works like how does the master cylinder/ brake fluid interact with the two wires connected?

The switch is pressure sensitive. When you step on the pedal brake fluid is forced into the switch and pushes on a diaphragm to make contact and light the brakes. When you take the switch off you will see a little hole in base of it. Cheap enough to just replace...to clean out your brake lines, master cylinder etc. it will be easier if you can get a pressure bleeder setup... I also have a 62 Flareside and it came from Cal - now in Mass.....

Thanks for your help P38, I'm going to see if I can order it through napa. If I can't I'll just order it through LMC or this place in Sacramento. I'm just not trying to pay more for shipping than the items worth seems a little silly,
