Un Duallied

I decided that I wanted to convert my '00 F350 CC dually to a SRW truck. I did alot of researching on the topic and in 99% of the threads that I found on the subject, one of the most common replies directed at the OP was why would you want to do that? My response to that question would have been cause it's my truck and I just want to! LOL. I just was never thrilled with it being a dually, I'm just not a fan of the looks of most dually trucks. You may ask why I bought the truck if I don't like a dually? Well cause I got it dirt cheap. Anywho, the dually bed on my truck had been treated pretty rough by the previous owner and I had kinda been looking for a replacement dually bed since I bought the truck. Every dually bed that I found that was in good shape was way out of my price range. From what I have seen, SRW beds are pretty easy to come by and are alot cheaper. So after some research I decided to go ahead with the conversion.

The first step was tires. Last year I bought 6 new BFG AT LT235/85/16 tires for my truck. These tires only had about 8K miles on them as of yesterday so I took them back to the tire shop where I bought them and traded them in on 4 new BFG AT LT285/75/16 tires. I put my truck up on jack stands and just took all 6 tires/wheels to the shop and I already had a set of OEM Ford steel wheels off of a '99 F250. The tire shop gave me 100 bucks for each of my old tires so the new set ended up costing me 275 bucks mounted and balanced.

The next step was removing the spacers on the front hubs, no big deal. Just remove the 8 nuts and knock the spacer loose with a BFH and mount the new wheel and tire in its place. Now for the rear. The Dana 80 rear end is about 4 inches wider than the Sterling 10.25 on the SRW trucks so that means the rear wheels will stick out about 2 inches farther than the front wheels. I was worried that this would look stupid but it's really not noticeable. So all I did for the rear was removed the dually wheels/tires and mount the new SRW wheels/tires.

The final step was to removed the ganked up dually fenders. As mentioned above the previous owner was really hard on the bed of this truck. These dually fenders were being held on by a mix of wood screws, sheet metal screws and the OEM bolts and nuts. All of them were rusted together or just all ganked up. So with the help of a dremel tool, cut off wheel, sawzall, and alot of sweat and cussing, I got the fenders off.

My next step is to find a new SRW bed and swap this old DRW bed out. Then I want to put a leveling kit on the front. I've done some looking on leveling kits but I don't know which one I should go with. What do you guys suggest?

Here are some pics. And before anyone points it out, I know the bed looks like a bag of ***, it WILL be replaced asap! LOL. Oh, and one good side effect that I noticed after doing this is that I need new rear brake calipers and with how the rear wheels set now, I'm pretty sure I can change out the rear calipers without even taking the wheels off!

Sorry for the long post and all the pics but I know there had been some confusion on several of the forums that I looked on about this topic so I thought I'd post it up for anyone that may be interested in doing something like this.

Interesting. I knew about the spacer on the front axle, but I didn't realize the rear would bolt up like that.

Very cool. If you change your mind about the rear wheel position you could get a set of wheels for an 05-07 truck and then run 2" spacers on the front.

I was actually planning on having to get some 2" spacers for the front to use with these '99 wheels but now I'm thinking its not noticeable enough to fool with. I'm gonna get a nice set of wheels after I replace the bed but I haven't decided what kind I want yet.

Nice job, if I ever get rid of my truck camper I may do this. Like you said, most dually beds are way overpriced.

Actually, it looks pretty good for a long bed. Great job on the conversion. New bed and I wouldn't worry about the track width.

Thanks for sharing the project! I have a SRW already but always wondered how a conversion would go.

It will look just fine if you bondo/repair the bed you have now. Rattle can it for a few months, while you search.
