Well I have a 390 in my 72 with a standard 4 speed (t18) with 4.10 rear end and dana 44 front axle. How much would I have to change to put a 460 in it because I found a great deal on a 460. What parts would fit on the 460 from the 390 as far as clutch, coil, manifolds, distributer, starter, flywheel, radiator, engine mounts, things like that?
you will need new frame towers, motor mounts, bellhousing for t18, flywheel, maybe clutch, headers or manifolds, starter, distributor.
you can keep the carb, coil, radiator.
nothing from the 390 will fit the 460
Well it comes with the whole truck which is an 85, would I be able to use the motor towers on my 72 or are the frames too differant? I would probably have to get a new exaust system?
Carbs are not engine specific so a 2 barrel carb should swap easily.
Ford engine families use specific frame perches. I don't know if the 80s will work but Ford used the 460 in later 70s models. Find a set from then to compare or use in your truck.

No 'frame towers' with 4WD, because there's no engine cross member to bolt them to. Engine supports bolt to inner frame rails.
460 not available with 4WD or a M/T until 1983, used a hydraulic clutch thru 1997. 1983/97 460 engine mounting parts will not work on 1979 or prior years.
Their is after market mounts for a 460 set up in these 70's 4wd trucks for about $100 bucks. Some guys make there own. So if your not handy at making stuff work then you pay for it. And your 2brl carb would mostly need larger jets for the 460 beast. When piecing things together that your not sure of you always run into problem. Best to just keep researching until you know for sure. Or buy a compete motor & tranny set up with all the goodies that maybe needed like a wrecked Donor truck...orich
