I would really appreciate if somebody would give me a list of what i will need to swap the 360 that is currently in my highboy to a 460. I have a 360 flywheel for the internally balanced 460. 11'' diaphram clutch and pressure plate that came with the 460. And Bellhousing from 1985 460 that was bolted to a T-18 4-speed. Will this setup work? Do i still need spacers between the bellhousing and block? If this setup does not work...which setup will?
There was a big thread about this in the 73 forum.......can't be more than a coulple of days old, you should check it out.
I know the common formula is to use the 390 flywheel with the 351m or 400 bellhousing. Most guys say a spacer isn't needed, but some report you will have starter misalignment problems. Don't know if your 85 bellhousing would work. I would "assume" not otherwise everybody wouldn't use the 351m bellhousings.
I'm sure you know L&L have entire kits to make this a simple bolt up affair but their $$$
460 swap
Q 1973-77 f-250 4 wd with 360-390 engine and c-6 transmission
will the 460 bolt up to the c-6 from 360 engine?
A no, different bolt pattern
Qwill i have to change the exhaust?
A yes
Q will i have to get motor mounts for the 460?
A yes
Q will i have change the motor mount towers on the frame ?
A yes towers for the 360 set to high for the 460 block.
Q will the alternator or power steering brackets from the 360 engine fit the 460?
A no ford did not offer the 460 as a option in the f-250 4 wd trucks from 73-79.
I will be using L&L products mounts and towers. and exaust wont be a problem because i am going to run tractor pull headers right out of the hood. I just really need to know if what i have (which i stated in the first thread) will work or if i will need to get other parts to make it work. It would be really great if i could just get a list of what i need by someone who has done this project. I have a pretty good idea of what i need and what i need to do but would like to be reassured by someone who has done this swap before. Also will there be any problems with clutch linkage if i use the 85 bellhousing(hydraulic clutch, not manual). thanks :]
A friend of mine and myself put a 460 in his 1976 Ford HiBoy. We used his 390 flywheel. We solved the bellhousing problem by using a Lakewood 460 blowproof bellhousing. You can use the fork from your 390 bellhousing. You must drill out the pressed on fork holder and simply bolt it on to the blowproof. I'm assuming with your exhaust system you are going to use the truck for truck pulling. This is also what we do. The blowproof bellhousing is a nice safety option especially with the high rpm's. For the motor mounts, we used a steel plate and made our own solid motor mounts. It is a pretty simple swap, and you save alot of money that can go into more performance parts.
Ok so how do you get a blowproof 460 bellhousing. Will my 85 460 bellhousing work the same? When you mean "drill out the pressed on fork holder you mean the thing that is bolted/pressed on to the block of the 360? Is there some way i can build some brackets to hold this fok holder. My highboy has an additional 4 " skyjacker lift with 38.5" boggers that i race in nebraska and south dakotas mud racing circuit. www.msmra.com Thanks for any additional info from anyone.
I guess I wasted my time answering the same bellhousing and clutch questions in your other thread. We can keep answering the same questions over and over but you won't know for sure until you try it and see if it will work. Every swap is different, you need to trial fit the stuff and see if it will work. I have done four 4-speed swaps with 351M bellhousings and 360 or 460 flywheels and ran into SMALL problems with each one. Bolt the stuff together and see if it works. A Lakewood bellhousing doesn't guarentee everything will fit either. Iv'e had clearence problems with one of them also.

Hey man i just wanna make sure i can get as much info as i can from people who have done this. I am only 19 and i will be doing this by MYSELF with my own money and my own two hands. sorry if i aggravated you.
That is the best way to learn. get your hands dirty and problem solve. Then you can stand back and take pride in what you done. Thats what I like about FORDS not just anyone can throw one together like a CH#VY. That is how I have learned what little I do know and am still learning. So I try to help someone else when I can. LIke I said in my last post, every situation is different so its hard to tell you for sure what will work and what won't. PM or e-mail me I have just the motor mounts you need.
Yeah i knew no matter how much i knew there would still be problems once i got started. I just want to be prepared for what was ahead and maybe prevent some of that. I dont know your email address so i cant email you. I was going to use L&L stands and mounts but if you can give me a better deal i am more than willing.
it wont tell me...it says i have to be registered for 30 days...i've only been registered for like a week. Just for kicks check out www.msmra.com : that is the circuit i race in and there is pics of my truck there.
What type of exhaust are you currently running?? If it is upright headers for a 360, what do you plan on doing with them after the swap? Let me know of any extra parts you may be willing to get rid of.
Right now i am just running stock manifolds with straight pipes. If you were wondering about a set of tractor pull headers for the ford FE I know a guy from valentine that can make them. All you have to do is give him a set of exhaust manifold gaskets and he can machine them. I have seen alot of tractor pull type headers that he has made for many different engine and he does do a good job.
