2001 no start

I purchased a 2001 f350 7.3L that has been sitting for years. Previous owner said it wouldn't start one day and he cranked it until the starter blew up; and it sat for about 4 years until i bought it.

I got it home and replaced the starter, and true to his word it won't start. Only code is p0603. I assume thats from years of dead batteries?

So far I have checked fuel pressure at the bowl; 60PSI. Any advise on where to go from here? Is there a way to see if the injectors are receiving the electronic signal to fire? that way i could at least narrow down between an electrical problem or fuel delivery problem. thanks!

I'm guessing its more of an oil issue. Check oil level and try to verify ICP and IPR values. If you can get an AE or ScanTool scanner, you can do a buzz test (to verify the injectors getting their signals and that they are moving) and you can read ICP and IPR values, which is the oil pressure acting upon the injectors which makes them fire.

What are you using to read the codes? Most scanners won't pick up engine specific codes.

Until then, let's cover some of the basics. How does the engine oil look? Does the tach bounce any while cranking? Do all dash lights function normally with the key? Is there a chip in the truck? (If so, remove the key from the ignition before pulling the chip) Any smoke out the tail pipe while cranking? HPOP reservoir got oil in it?

I'm using a Equus OBD2 scan tool, not sure of the model. how do I verify the IPR values? Engine is full of oil. I will check the Hpop level in the morning. that never occurred to me.. The tach does bounce, I believe that there is a super chip program in it because there is hand held tuner in the truck. No smoke from the tail pipe.

i would run some of the fuel into a clear bottle and take a good hard look at it after it has had a chance to sit for a little in the bottle. I bought one with that exact same scenario one time and it was bad fuel in it. They too had cranked it until they blew up the starter. Might also check the IPR solenoid as well

Also, did u put new batteries in it? or what are you using to power it up?

What am i looking for in the fuel? look and smells like diesel. I did change the fuel filter and new batteries. I will look in the book for the IPR solenoid.

I don't think its a bad fuel problem because it "just quit running one day" according to the last owner. Last owner did mention a diesel mechanic told him "the computer said fuel wash in cylinder 1" and suggested the valve cover gasket as a possible fix, not sure how credible the story is.

The one i had, had the same back story. Just quit running at the redlight. When i drained the fuel into the clear (wine) bottle and let it sit on the porch overnight untouched, there were 3 different fluids that settled out. Water was the largest on the bottom, diesel was one, and I am not sure what the other layer was. It smelled fine though. Truck would not even try to smoke with that stuff in it.

i drained the tank and put fresh diesel in it and off it went once I finally purged all the old crap out of the fuel system.

Make sure u keep the batteries charged while you work with the truck. It requires 10.5 v minimum to crank.

If it "just quit running" I would try a new CPS just in case that's the problem. Check the oil in the HPOP first though, because without that it won't start.

edit: sorry saw you said the tach was bouncing so that means the CPS is working.

did you replace any fuses? if so, check them all again and tell us which one if any is blown. could be as simple as the fuel bowl heater shorting out, you could just unplug that from the back of the fuel bowl.

Try unplugging the ICP sensor and see if it will start. when mine went out it would crank and not even try to fire. When you unplug it, the PCM "guesses" what it should be at while running.

My 2001 had an intermittent problem with the main wiring harness rubbing and shorting wires out, which then caused it to barely run, sometimes not. Ended up having wires chafe on the inside of the protective tubing about a foot under the main VC connected. Took me a week to find, but only 3 cents to fix. Since then I've found 2 other 'worn' wires. That's the only time I've had a SEL come on, and it was something to do with the IDM. Now whenever I have a problem that's not obvious, I always start checking at that spot.

That tuner should read codes for the truck, I don't think your Equus will.

You have good fuel pressure, so your ok there.

You need 10.5 volts while cranking, 100 rpm and 700 psi (or so, I forget the exact number) of HPO for the injectors to fire.

Do you get a wait to start light?

I unplugged the ice sensor no start. Tested fuel pressure at rail it's over 60 psi.

Just for fun I pulled a plug out of the oil rail on the drivers side and had a friend crank the engine over while I watched the hole. It sort of puked oil, not exactly hundreds of psi like the book says, is that normal?

U have to think about the size of the hole IMHO. U put a garden hose to a psi washer tip, u get a lot of psi.U put a garden hose to a firehose, not so much. The orifices for the HPO system are smaller. So by pulling the plug, u would not have had a large amount of psi but should have a decent flow. If u had a nice puking flow, i would think that is working to some degree.

Just put a gauge on the oil rail, over 1000 psi at crank. Getting fuel and oil pressure must be electrical? Injectors not opening?
