Had to go over the grapevine today. A grade of 13% and about 10 miles long. I do this pretty often. I drive an '02 F350 DRW 7.3 with a 6 speed ZF. 250,000 mies on the odo. It has never done this before but today when I downshift to 5th and floor the accelerator I hear a howling noise that seems to be tied in with boost. It comes on @ around 2250 RPM and increases up tp 2500 RPM. I can make it decrease if I back out of the throttle and make it increase again by opening the throttle.
Anybody have this happen to them?
Could it be a boost leak? The best thing to do on the grape vine is set your cruise control before the grade and ride it out, assuming you can keep your EGTs in check. No need to hammer down half way up. That's no good for anyone.
A/Ox4,that's exactly the way I do it, on cruise @70. I had to speed up to accommodate traffic and that's when I first noticed it. I agre it must be boost related because I can make it come or go with slight adjustments to the throttle.
By the way I weigh just over 13,000 pounds and it still does 70 on the grapevine and will accelerate when called for.
Thomabb, I know what the fan sounds like. This is kinda like a whistle that I can make come and go at will with the throttle. Thanks for responding though. I appreciate your interest.
For those of you tat were interested in the answer, I have tried several things to identify the cause, unsuccessfully. It does not seem to be causing any harm so I think I will live with it.

Did it just recently happen? Check the boost that goes into the turbo from the filter for cracks.
I get the same thing under certain circumstances while pulling. I don't like it and immediately get out if that range. Mine kicks in when I'm in OD and hit 12-14 psi boost. I think it is surge related. It's almost like a very rapid chirp, just short of being a solid tone. I plan on a new wheel and turbo rebuild at some point.
