First of all overdrive started to play up, the engine would flare as it went into OD and often would have several goes at it until it engaged OD.
Finally it wouldn't go into OD.
Still driving it around for awhile then it went into limp home mode - stuck in 3rd gear.
Sounds like the valve body to me. a complete rebuild is the route I took for $3000. Same symptoms. Also a shop told me a bushing inside the tyranny had ground down. Idk if that was true but it works great after rebuild.
Searched Elm 37 , showed a " scanner or scan guage " . Greek to me . But if you can get some codes and post them , We can give better Ideas . If nothing else , ck connector into the tranny for corrosion ,damage , ect . Get a wiring diagram and Ohm out the solenoids and harness . You may be able to find a known problem there . Ck all external wiring for chafing , burning , rodent damage , ect .
Why anyone would want to buy someone elses used POS trans is beyond me.
Rebuilt 85,000 km ago means nothing unless you know who rebuilt it and how good of a job they did.
I had a trans that was "rebuilt" 20,000 miles ago. First time I pulled a trailer, the trans broke. When I took it to the shop, the reasons why were apparent, it was done incorrectly. Only the parts related to its original failure were replaced, so it still had the original bands, they had simply been retightened, it had a 4 cylinder planetary assembly from a different year, etc.
Unless something is really catastrophically wrong with yours, you are almost always better off finding a good trans builder, and having him rebuild your old unit. The results tend to last longer, and be more cost effective dollar for dollar than buying used units. If the builder knows what he is doing, you will end up with a unit that is stronger, tougher, and longer lasting than a brand new unit from Ford.
Hopefully it's not a POS.
It's a cheap, fast solution which is what I need now.
The trans that comes out will be rebuilt with the updates and modifications, but6 that will be later.
Thanks mate.
I might even end up buying the 2000 Ltd the trans comes from.
The engine and trans were both rebuilt 18 months ago, the car is almost spotless with small dent on the hood and no cracks in the leather.
It needs a tailgate, which I have. I can get it for $1000.
We had the same issue with my wife's Explorer. Rebuilt tranny with a mild shift kit and a little adjusting took care of it.
These are set to shift smooth from factory, soft shifts means more wear. It doesn't have to jerk like a race car, but a shift that you can actually feel will keep the transmission lasting much longer than the buttery smooth shifts from factory.
All the car manufacturers are worried about these days is keeping the car alive just past the warranty. If you really pay attention while working you can see shortcuts that will artificially limit the lifespan of your car.
