The rad in my ol faithful (almost 223,000 miles) 2001 SD gave out the other day while heading out fishing.
Any suggestions on a reliable brand to replace the OEM unit with? I see several makers out there. I need to order something soon, just don't want to order junk.
Yours lasted 12 years and 223k miles why not get another Ford radiator. I believe Toulsey Ford is a sponsor here and has great prices. Someone here may be able to post a link for you.
Just did mine from NAPA, while I was stuck behind an AutoZone. The Napa one I got came with the oil cooler built into it, even though my original did not. I think it was 218.00? Fit PERFECT, easy to install. Took all of 12 minutes, 3 of which were spent spitting coolant out of my mouth.... Mine broke completely at the upper radiator hose inlet. Did not realize they were plastic until now.
That price doesn't look bad, similar to Autozone pricing. I'll hunt them down. I guess was curious if there was any spiffier rads out there in the same price range.
The replacement seems pretty strait forward unless I'm mistaken. Airbox, upper core support, hoses & shroud removal, then getting it unstuck.
I see some rad tanks are plastic, some units are all aluminum?
Mine's drippin' down both sides, streams & drips from both the lower rubber mount cushions.
I am not sure if the 2001 has the transmission cooler in the bottom of the radiator or not. I know my e99 didn't so I replaced it with a 2003 factory unit.
The part number is 4C3Z-8005-EB. It is the same part for 1999 - 2005 but that is just the year I gave them to look up the part. If your 2001 doesn't have the trans lines in it, I would suggest that you replace it with the one I listed so that you can have extra cooling for your trans.
As others have mentioned, Tousley is a great online source with great prices. I went to order my 6.0 cooler from them and the guy advised me to find it local because they tend to get damaged in shipping. Here is the link to there site. http://www.tousleyfordparts.com/
I went with the factory radiator because I didn't want to deal with getting a possible inferior part from a local parts store.
None of the dealers within 50 miles had the radiator, and even if they did they wanted full MSRP. I grabbed up a Sprectra from NAPA, fit was good, lifetime warranty. Hope it holds up!
I do think I got the coolant ratio kinda rich, I'll have to test that today. I poured in a 1/2 gal of SCA & 4 gal of coolant and had room for about 3 quarts of distilled. Most the fluid in the block was probably city water & some coolant so I'm planning a full "Gooch" flush in the near future...
If you are going to do the full flush you might want to think about using CAT EC-1 rated coolant. I don't remember if Gooch talks about that or not. No SCA to deal with and coolant is good for 300K before needing a "recharge". From what I have gathered the "casting sand"
that some people describe is actually precipitate of the SCA's as they ware out. No SCA'S, no need for a coolant filter unless some really hard water was used with the coolant mix. There should be no problems with internal corrosion if the proper coolant and mix is used
Indeed, Gooch touched on the EC-1 rating quite a bit. I'm gonna be looking into the Delo HD ELC or similar. I guess Peak has a Fleet Guard or something and I seem to recall several other brands mentioned. I'm going to check with Tractor Supply here & see what they carry. There's also a couple truck stops local. I haven't driven much since the install but I have been adjusting the coolant ratio, it's way too rich and pegging the little AF tester I picked up yesterday. I've drained out & saved about 2 gallons and replaced with distilled water so far I've run it up to operating temp, heater on full, in the driveway but it seems I may need to get it out on the road for a while to get the coolant circulating well?
