Replacing transfer case input shaft seal

My '97 F-250 trans (E4OD) is losing fluid and my t.case (44-07) is gaining it. As I understand there's no seal at the rear of the trans, so it's the t.case input shaft seal that is supposed to prevent that from happening. So it's time to replace that seal.

Looking at my shop manual it looks like the seal installs from the outside of the case, but the instructions don't talk about removing the old one until the case is split open and everything else has been pulled out of the front half of the case.

If the new seal installs from the outside, is it possible to remove the old seal without disassembling the case? I'd prefer not having to disassemble and reassemble the whole thing, and I'd like to have a little better idea of how big a job I'm looking at before I start pulling the t.case

I'm not experienced in the way of transfer case seals, but generally speaking, all you'd have to do is "rip" the old seal out. If you have a hook tool or pick of some kind, you can break through the rubber and get a grip on the seal with it, then pull it out.

Of course, everything is easier said than done; and maybe you'll need to loosen, but not remove, some of the case bolts to get enough wiggle room to remove the old seal and install the new one.

Yeah, I figure there's a reasonable chance that I can hook the old seal and rip it out. If I can, it seems very likely that I can put the new one in without disassembling the case. I'm just hoping there's someone out there that's done it so I know if I'm looking at a 1 day job or a 1 week job before I take my truck out of commission.

And loosening case bolts won't help anything. The case splits into a front half and a rear half. The input shaft and front output shaft come through the front half of the case while the rear output goes through the rear half. If I can't R&R the seal completely from the outside I'm going to need to take the input shaft out, and that'll mean splitting the halves apart and completely disassembling the front half.

Are you having fluid come out of the transfer case vent by any chance? I think mine has the same issue m5od trans tho, but I believe the trans is overfilling the transfer case and its venting the fluid out.

I just installed a BW 1356 in my F150 with a 5 sp & from looking at the input seal I determined it is installed from the inside. Yes that is the seal to prevent fluid from going between the two it is a double lipped seal. For the B/W it is over $50.

This write up is about the 1356 (which is also what kermmydog referenced). I have the 44-07. It might be the same, but it might not.

Again, my shop manual seems to show installing the seal from the outside, but it doesn't talk about removing the seal until the input shaft is removed, and that comes out from the inside. I'm sure it's easier to drive out the seal from the inside, so if I was going to be disassembling my case anyway I'd certainly do that. But I don't need to do anything other than replace the input shaft seal, so I'm hoping I don't need to open the case which would make the job a lot longer.

It's looking like no one looking at this thread has worked on a 44-07 t.case, so I guess I'm just going to have to figure it out as I go.

A transfer case from the same era and manufacturer and fitting similar applications will probably be very similar, I'm sure it will be useful.

I know people don't like dangling threads. I don't have a wrap up for this one, but I figured I'd at least say that. When I bought this truck I took it to a mechanic to look over. He's the one that told me the t.case input seal must be leaking because the trans was about a quart low and the t.case was about a quart high. Since then I've put about 3k on it and when I pulled the t.case fill plug no fluid came out. It was full to the fill plug, but not over full. So I've decided that I'm not going to sweat it for now. I'll be keeping an eye on the fluid level and if I do end up needing to replace the seal I'll update this thread to let people know if it requires opening up the case.
