I have a '96 F150 4WD. The extension of the back of the transfer case is leaking fluid right where the drive shaft goes in. I have been told that it is easier to replace the whole extension than it is to replace the bushing and seal. My question is where can I get an extension besides going to the dealer?
I'd replace the seal first. Get yourself a decent technical manual, a suitable seal puller and an installation tool and go for it. Some brave folk use a screwdriver to pry out the old seal and a socket and hammer to install the new one. I'd use the right tools if at all possible.
The job is relatively easy as long as you take your time and don't put any gouges into the tailshaft housing when pulling the old seal.
Thanks for the reply Lou. I think the bushing is bad too. I know I can get a bushing/seal kit for it, but I have been told I can buy the whole extension fairly cheap and replace it all. But the only place I can find the whole extension is at the dealer and they are telling me it's $170. I was just wondering if I can get an extension from someplace other than the dealer-like a 4 x 4 off road shop. But I haven't found any. When I do a search on the internet for it, I get aot of sights to go to, but they all offer the whole transfer case-not just the extension. I was hoping someone here could point me in that direction just so I can get some other prices.
It seems like I have an excessive amount of play in the bushing so I wanted to replace it all. I haven't been able to find a replacement housing anywhere but the dealer. So I think I will replace the seal and bushing instead. But now my new problem is I have easily found the seal at just about any auto parts store, but no one seems to know what the bushing is. I found an exploded view of my transfer case online, so I am going to print it out to show people exactly what I am talking about when I tell them what I need.
I had my Trans serviced today. new fluid, gasket and filter.
At the sametime they checked my drive sytem.
Transfer case out drive bushing had some play up-down side-side play but the mechanic said it was normal even though the seal is leaking.
My trouble is in the diff. there is too much play causing CLUNK.
Bummer. $700 to fix.
I found Drivetrain.com online. They sell all kinds of transfer case parts and whole transfer cases. The whole extension I need is $95. It should be at my house today.
Let me know if this takes care of your problem, My 93 F250 has been leaking for some time, With the 4 inch lift, it made it worse. The truck has 220,000 miles on it so probably the reason.
the reason tour is leaking worse with a four inch lift is because of the aditional stress you have put on it, you may want to look into getting an extreme angles drive shaft, (has a cv style joint at one end). its gonna smoke a new one that much quicker. jsut something to think about.
Yeah, I was figuring that, But I put the 4 inch blocks out of an F350 that had the same setup as I have. Slip yoke and non CV type drive shaft. So basicly I added 2 inches to the F250 because it origionally had 2 inch blocks.I also lengthend the driveshaft about 1 inch myself which may not be perfectly balanced.
that may also be a reason you have developed a leak and wear, driveshafts must be perfectly balanced, or darn near close, howd you lengthen it yourself? bit it does seem easier to just replace the whole assembley, fortunatly i have a fixed yoke on my 87 f-140 4x4 351 auto. i feel its a better setup.
Oh also, i just remembered, what about your yoke,?? is it tight, when i bought my truck it had a thump cluck noise and th yoke was falling off the pinion, just a thought.
